I looked up "Vestibulectomy" on Wikipedia and it turns out that's something entirely different.

Turns out what I was looking for was Labyrinthectomy, and yes, it is a real treatment for Ménière’s disease.

It is, but it causes complete deafness.  It involves the "sacrifice" of the cochlea.

True, but for anyone who was questioning whether it is a real thing, it is.

Thank you. I just didn't know.

I have been told I can breath through my ears  >:D

Some years back I perforated an eardrum during a freediving class. (A very minor thing that completely healed itself within a few days.) I was doing a warm-up pull-down to 20 meters and heard a pfffft sound at 18 meters so I turned and came back up and told my instructor "I think I blew my eardrum." He told me to hold my nose, put my head under water, and blow. Bubbles came out my ear, confirming that I had indeed perforated the eardrum. And incidentally demonstrating that with a perforated eardrum you can indeed exhale (slowly) through your ear.

I'm not sure that a bilateral labyrinthectomy is a procedure that is currently used on human patients.

The OP must be a very extreme case, and I imagine their team of specialist doctors is giving them the best possible advice on their prognosis and treatment options. It sounds like a drastic procedure, and the known risks and drawbacks to such a procedure should far outweigh any concerns brought up from a paragraph on mice buried in a paper from several years ago.

I don't want to be cynical, but based on this and a lot of other related postings on message boards across the web, I am skeptical of the OP's sincerity.

I'm puzzled over why someone would misrepresent this type of question. Is this a new type of trolling? What's the motivation?

Before I became a mod, I managed to engage a troll in conversation for a couple of posts, they couldnt really explain why they did what they did.
I knew a guy irl who was a catfish for lesbians and again, he couldnt really explain his actions.
So yeah, some people are just inexplicably weird

Catfishing is luring someone into a romantic relationship with a fake online persona.  Sometimes it is done with ulterior motives like financial exploitation, sometimes just to mess with them. It’s very cruel.

After looking into this a little more, I feel much more sure that there is something fishy going on with the OP. I tried to think of how it can be a scam or something nefarious, but you are probably right, Harry. The Occam's razor explanation is just that some people are totally bizarre. ???
