Phosphate

Is that a country or personal thing because of the phosphoric acid?

It's an old name because of the phosphoric acid. Was used locally when I was in high school, northern Illinois, 1970s.

They were still saying "phosphate" in the 1970s? That's amazing. I thought that was a '50s thing.

As a kid in Illinois in the '70s and '80s we used to call it "pop."

I call all carbonated drinks ‘Coke,’ and then avoid them like the plague.  I can’t remember the last time I had any.

I’m currently thinking about buying ‘Heroic Failure.  Brexit and the Politics of Pain’ by Fintan O’Toole.  The Irish author noted in the introduction that he visited England as a child and was drinking some Fanta (in my opinion, a nauseating over sweet drink, which I never liked), and was asked by someone whether he was enjoying his ‘pop,’ a term I’d never previously heard for carbonated soft drinks (and soda to me still sounds odd).

Soda

I find it appalling when someone calls anything other than a Coca-Cola a Coke. If you ask me for a Coke, I’ll ask “Diet or regular?”
If you respond “A Pepsi.” I’ll be thinking about it all day, and probably lose sleep over it. ☹️

I know I’m wrong when I refer to all carbonated drinks as ‘coke,’ but it goes along with the ‘Coca-Colonisation’ of the world.

Don’t worry.  I’ll never ask you for a Coke.

Soda. Nobody in the Northeast calls it anything else, though they would understand you (perhaps after a double-take) if you said ‘pop.’ If you ask for a Coke, you’re getting a Coca-cola or nothing.

My stepmother used to call all soft drinks "tonic" - meaning Disney was right about stepmothers from the beginning! ;)

Disney's stepmothers were just watered-down versions from The Brothers Grimm. They're the ones who were right about step-mothers!

Soft drink. It's only ever been called soft drink.
