Soda, Pop, Coke, or other?
« on: August 16, 2019, 12:42:54 PM »
We haven't done one of these in a while.

For me its Soda but I live in Atlanta where an orange soda is often referred to as a Coke, all soda is Coke, even Pepsi but one would never actually drink that as the coke police will show up at your house. We pretend its a coke when we visit Taco-bell and KFC. I grew up in an area where people call it Pop but for some reason my family called it soda.

I'm guessing there will be other names in other countries so if you have a similar argument or standard name where you live let me know and I'll add them to the list.

I typically prefer Pepsi, and Pepsi Max to be more specific. Does that count under "Coke", or "Other"? It depends on if you define "Coke" as the product of Coca-Cola Company, or the kind of drink that Coke is.

sorry, the question is not what do you drink but  "What do you call "soft drinks" in general? In the US its most likely you will say Pop, Soda, or Coke.

I'll add "Fizzy drinks" for Tatyana

Soda and pop are interchangeable. As a kid we even used sodapop. In Trinidad it was sweetdrink.

I would say "pop".  It's the only proper Canuckian thing to do.

When I was growing up, we all said coke as in "what kind of coke do you want?" As I got into my teens, I started saying pop or sometimes soda.  Now I just say pop.

I've used all but pop, it sounds weird to me. I know what people mean when they say it, but it seems wrong. My wife is from the mid west and know pop is much bigger over there but when I hear it used  am secretly judging them.

I generally call it soft drink or soda. At one time we sometimes called it soda pop. Since you mentioned other countries, in Mexico it's refresco. And there are many kinds there other than Coke, though Coke may be the most popular. (I don't like colas. I like some brands of ginger beer as well as root beer and Dr. Pepper, but only sugar-free non-caffeinated. Sometimes I drink fruit-flavored sodas, but I dilute them with about 4 parts water to one part soda. They're too sweet otherwise.)

Um.

Kim Mitchell is fairly Canuckian.

Go for Soda
Might as well go for a soda

Might as well go for a soda

So we're in one of our blue moods
You wanna have it your way and I want it mine
All this debating going 'round in our blue mood
Makes me thirsty for love

Might as well go for a soda

Life seems to be a bomb inside of your head
Well the bomb in my head is love

I say fizzy drinks.
Most other Irish people say 'minerals' which is annoying.

Glaswegians say 'juice' which is disgusting, wrong and may explain the overall health of the wegie population!

I say "Soda" or "Pop".  When I was in Mississippi it was "Coke".... as in, "I'm going to the store, want a Coke?", "Yeah", "What kind of Coke do you want?", "Dr. Pepper".

In Tasmania we call them cordial.

The name does vary from State to state. In other aussie states cordial refers to a non-fizzy fruity drink. Tasmanians call non-fizzy drinks "water cordial"

I have heard them called "fizzy cordial" or "fizzy drink" in other parts of Australia
