The Bible says "Love God and your neighbor as yourself." I don't particularly like myself, and if I wasn't me I wouldn't want to spend time with me. But since I'm stuck being me, I make the most of it and have as much fun as I can. These days that mostly means paddling on the ocean and swimming in it. I don't love myself, but I sure love the life I'm leading these days.
I didn't know the whackjobs went around asking people if they loved themselves these days. They always used to ask you if you loved Jesus.
Many, many years ago (30-ish) I had a t-shirt that said NUKE A GODLESS COMMUNIST GAY BABY SEAL FOR CHRIST. I wore it to the park and I was sitting on a bench waiting for a friend when an elderly couple came walking by. They stopped, stared at me for a long minute, and then, obviously unable to parse the words, the woman said in her sweet little-old-lady voice: "Oh. You love the Lord. That's nice." And they turned and continued their walk.
Back then, you were supposed to love God and Jesus. Not yourself.
I never wore that t-shirt again. I donated it to a clothing drive headed to Nicaragua.
