"Do you love yourself?"
« on: September 13, 2019, 01:31:10 AM »
I had a religious person, Christian, ask me that question and I really did not know how to answer it.
Not sure that it is really a valid question

Thoughts?

I love me. I think I'm grand.
I love to sit and hold my hand.
When I grow up I'll marry me
and try and raise a family.

 ;D

It is a silly question. If I was asked that by a random bible basher, I'd probably give a cheeky and rude answer

What did they mean my "love" in this case?

Presumably it's a sin if you do.

I love myself at least once a day, sometimes more.

I would say “it depends” and then ask 50 clarifying questions. Start with, “What does that mean, mean, mean?” I look continuously perplexed at their questions and answers.

Ok, so maybe, “let me think about it and get back to you someday.”

Or, yep, good to go.

It’s philosophical mumbo jumbo.

The Bible says "Love God and your neighbor as yourself." I don't particularly like myself, and if I wasn't me I wouldn't want to spend time with me. But since I'm stuck being me, I make the most of it and have as much fun as I can. These days that mostly means paddling on the ocean and swimming in it. I don't love myself, but I sure love the life I'm leading these days.

I didn't know the whackjobs went around asking people if they loved themselves these days. They always used to ask you if you loved Jesus.

Many, many years ago (30-ish) I had a t-shirt that said NUKE A GODLESS COMMUNIST GAY BABY SEAL FOR CHRIST. I wore it to the park and I was sitting on a bench waiting for a friend when an elderly couple came walking by. They stopped, stared at me for a long minute, and then, obviously unable to parse the words, the woman said in her sweet little-old-lady voice: "Oh. You love the Lord. That's nice." And they turned and continued their walk.

Back then, you were supposed to love God and Jesus. Not yourself.

I never wore that t-shirt again. I donated it to a clothing drive headed to Nicaragua.

One of those questions where the answer hinges on the definition of a word with both uncanny power and vague meaning.
Kinda like "god".
There's no such thing as denial.
