Why doesn't he get a real job and stop buying avocado toast?

How do you know he's not retired and this property is his pension plan?

What the government should be doing, instead of giving money to banks and big corporations, is provide unemployment payments at 100% of former income, to all out-of-work people so that they can pay their rent and other bills. That way landlords and others get their money. Then the government can compensate businesses that have had to close. Depending on if there's a mortgage, owning a single 32-unit building might not put the landlord in a high-wealth category at all.

And if the renters force the landlord into bankruptcy, the bank could well sell the building to a developer who will evict them once the crisis is over, and convert the building into condos. They gain free rent for the duration and then lose their homes.

Unfortunately, the reality is that any big event, whether it be a disaster or a windfall, is an opportunity for the rich to take more from the poor. Whether it's a good event or a bad event, when it's all over the rich come out richer and the poor come out poorer. This comes inevitably from having a political system run by rich people.

No, I’m sympathetic to landlords because, like many other people, they are facing bankruptcy due to coronavirus and are as justified as anyone in their fears and anxiety. I, at least, have enough sympathy to go around.

I'm wondering if banks and utilities are making the same considerations for apartment owners as they are for homeowners.

If I wanted to I could stop paying my mortgage (I'm not laid off, but my wife's hours have been reduced).

The debt continues to accrue interest, and I can start paying again after a period of time (I think I can miss three payments now, and they will extend the number of months if needed).

However, I would have to pay interest accrued during that time, so at the end I'd either have to make a single extra interest payment or do a higher monthly payment.

I can also stop paying gas, electric, water, sewer, trash, but would still be on the hook for what I use when this is over.

A break from mortgage and utility payments for apartment owners could keep them going while their tenants are struggling.

... and Donald Trump is president of the United States

Sometimes investments don't pay off. Why should that be any different for landlords than for any other investors? Should I be more sympathetic to capitalists because they're old?

Even if they could evict their tenants, it's unlikely they'd get new ones in time to make anything OK.

I'm trying to make a distinction between rich investors, and someone who might have no more than your retired grandmother, but instead of a retirement fund with stocks his retirement fund is a rental property. Government aid should be based on need, not on irrelevant factors. And I think I said that the government should provide unemployment insurance payments to unemployed people at 100% of their wages/salary, so they could pay their rent. Don't bail out companies or landlords. Bail out people so that they have money to pay their bills, and the whole economy gets some support.
