We have just added advertising to the Skeptics Guide website. This is a harmless way to further support the activities of the NESS and SGU, and you can help by visiting the sponsors.

We know that the algorithms used by ad sense will put up completely inappriate ads. We can filter these out one by one as they crop up, but it does take some time for our requests to go through. Let us know if you see an ad on the site that you think is inappropriate, but only if it has been there for more than a couple of days.

Thanks to Firefox addons (http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/675) I do not see this ad component. I suggest that the Ness creates an advertising system like http://www.hackthissite.org/advertise/ .

I'm not a huge fan of internet ads.  But the way they're presented on the SGU site really doesn't take away from the content at all.  They're kind of tucked away to the side.

Anyway, you can expect a few clicks every so often from me to show support.

I think the adds are hilarious.  the top ad is just about education, but the bottom three "disprove evolution, and teach you how to commune with the gospels"

For a long time listener - no big deal, but for a new visitor, it might turn them off.

"I went to see this skeptics site, and there are a bunch of Christian ads there."

hah! That's true, I just noticed that.  "Scientific discoveries support ID, click here to find out more"  Needless to say I will not click on those. ;)

Thats why the Ness should do the kind of ads like Hack This Site. Information posted above.

I see four ads on the right.  One is neutral, one is a correct hit (a magazine reseller with Skeptic Magazine highlighted), and two are incorrect (Answers in Genesis, and "A frank essay showing some pitfalls of evolution using common sense").  So yeah, as you would expect, there is the expected proportion of incorrect hits.

But frankly, I kinda like the idea of the NESS making money because of sites like Answers in Genesis.  Click away!

Hey, another thing we might do is a detailed review of "A frank essay showing some pitfalls of evolution using common sense" pointing out all the inaccuracies and logical fallacies, and feature it prominently.  Then we can e-mail a link to the original site, and show them their Google ad dollars at work.

Okay, Dr. N, bottom line:

How much do we have to pay to get rid of the ads?

Hmm well I have $10 on me.  That's a start...  Oh wait, that's $10 Canadian. So about $8.90 USD. :)

I think Google Ads are perfectly fine.  There just needs to be some way to filter out the bunk - and there's a LOT of bunk.

I simply do not see the ads or the ads in Google searches. I use Greasemonkey in Firefox and have two scripts enabled dealing with these ads.
