Title: The Magicians
Post by: PANTS! on February 17, 2016, 09:41:26 AM
Anyone watching it?  It airs on Scyfy (or whatever the hell the call it).  I enjoyed the books, with some reservations*.  And the show is getting pretty good reviews.  What do y'all think?

*Rape should not be used as character advancement for the boyfriend.  While I'm on the subject, fuck you Downton Abby......

I'm somewhat enjoying Harry Potter's Creek.  I find the lead actor to be somewhat irritating, but it's about magic and shit so it'll do.

So I'm watching it and quite enjoying it. It's finding its balance as the season progresses. The acting is getting better - and it was a solid C+ to start with, unlike the Netflix series "Shadow Hunters" that has (yet) to overcome the acting.

The shows I'm interested in right now seem to have a BSG+[concept] vibe to them. The Magicians is BSG in tone, but Harry Potter in concept. The 100 is BSG tone as well, with something like Red Dawn as the concept? I'm not sure, really. Just sayin'.

I do like the machinations and the willingness to eviscerate characters that one might think important. I haven't read the books or looked at the publication timeline, so I don't know how they relate to GRRMDeath.

I gave up after 3 episodes but based on your comments I will watch a few more, It was not horrible C+ was a fair assessment, would you say its more of a B or higher as the season progresses?

I DVRd the marathon.  I am enjoying it, maybe more than I enjoyed the books.

B to B+, with some A moments.

I understand that there are books, but have no interest in them, which is odd for me.

The early episodes were very uneven, but had enough bright spots to keep me going.

I find the episodes are getting better as the show goes along.

It's very different from the books but this isn't all bad.  TV Penny and TV Quentin are much more likable than their book counterparts.  And contrary to other comments, I thinkt he acting is great.  Quentin, Alice and Julia in particular.  They seem to really just know who their characters are.

Oh yeah - that scene freaked me right the fuck out.  Which is unusual for a TV show.

In the books there is a great deal of sexual violence.  And Julia disappears from the books

, which I really disliked.

Are the books worth reading / listening (if they're on Amazon)?

I feel like the main theme of the books is learning to appreciate the world around you.  Quention spends a lot of time in the first 2 books lamenting that his life is only like 97% awesome instead of 100%.  Depending on your own circumstances this message will really resonate with you or piss you the fuck off.

The books also go way way deeper into the mechanics of magic.  Again, a certain type of person will just love this, while others will find it boring as hell.

I would probably love the mechanics, but have that enjoyment overwhelmed by the angst.

After a number of false starts trying to watch from episode one, I could not reconcile the Quentin from the books, that I made up in my head while reading, and the actor in the show. And the same for Penny.

This weekend I binge watched from episode 3 and am now current for the show tonight. It definitely has improved as it's progressed, I like the structure of the Neitherlands that the creators made, it's beyond the vision I had in my head.

My only critique is i kind of wished that they had taken a liberty with the name Penny and called him something else. every time I hear his name I hear:

The show is fer sure gathering up steam.  Each episode seems to top the last.  I do not like that they killed off
(click to show/hide)
tho.  But I think they come back?  Anyway, they really handled the
(click to show/hide)
story line very well.  So nasty.  And I like that they kept Julia in the first season.  Although I hope they avoid the woman in the fridge shit that she got in the books.  It looks like they might, but we shall see.

I am getting a little excited for the SciFi channel as a whole.  Between this and the Expanse they are doing some of the best genre work on TV.  Especially when you factor in the budgetary restrictions.

They certainly haven't pulled any punches as far as adult themes go. At least not for a basic cable network. They seem to skirt the Sex, Drinking, Smoking, language, gore they have got to be pushing the limits.

And is it my imagination or are they so subtly cutting the 'uc' out of the work fuck, that it's as present and impactful but not 'actually' said?

That is how they censor stuff nowadays.  They just blot out the word - no beep.

So God dammit - they went there with Julia.  I still have hopes that the show will handle it better than Lev.

So God dammit - they went there with Julia.  I still have hopes that the show will handle it better that Les.  They kinda have so far, in that she seems like a character with her own arc, and not a foil for Q's self improvement.  And they did the gotline thing again, so at least they aren't diminishing the act.

But I still wish they hadn't gone there.  Wasn't killing all her naive friends enough?

boo, but please spoiler tag! (shame on me for clicking though)

But anyway, in the books, while the "going there" bothered me, what bothered me more was that Julia never seemed to rise above sidekick.  At least in the show she feels important.  I didnt watch last nights episode so I hope that it doesnt change my feeling on this.

Yeah, that is why I am willing to give the show a bit more leash on this.  But still.....  I mean I KNEW that all was not hunky dory at the

At this stage of my life I'm reading more than I ever did, and almost none of it is fiction. I'm going to enjoy the show for what it is, and maybe one day, if I live long enough to become immortal, I'll consume this story in all the forms available. I'm several weeks behind at this stage - travels and all - and looking very much forward to catching up.

Read the books a while ago and thought then that they would make a pretty good series. I only started binging it the last couple of days. I'm up to Ep 9 I think.

My wife bought the first book and couldn't finish it, it pissed her off so bad. She hated Quentin's guts and wanted to see him die screaming with his orifices on fire. I picked it up and made my way through the series and talked her into reading it all the way through. She ended up enjoying it as much as I did after that.

The series has made what I feel are the necessary changes from the books to make a decent tv show. I even hate Quentin now (even though I know I'll root for him later) just like the books. If any of you are familiar with the books, there is a great Oceans 11 type scenario in the second or third book that will come across fantastic on TV if done correctly.

What you are describing is how I felt watching the first few episodes.
I HATED the main character. And all of the other characters actually.
I gave up on it but I may return if Im ever locked in a room with nothing but the boxset.

Season 2 seems to have fixed the pacing problem of season 1, at least somewhat.  the most recent episode was one of the best so far.

This is a pretty good season.  It is more poignant, and slower this season.  It is also more snarky.  I like the
(click to show/hide)
It continues to handle these themes pretty well.

It also has gotten more meta.  It frequently breaks the fourth wall, only without breaking the fourth wall.  The writers can get away with it, since all the characters know they are in a fantasy setting, so they can reference Buffy and GoT and how their current storyline has parallels, while all the otherworldly creature have no idea what they are on about.  In this way the meta winks and nod to each other also serve as a pseudo-aside to the audience, but it allows the characters to remain in character.
(click to show/hide)
I like the way they thread that needle.

This last ep was pretty cool,

Not as good as season 2, better than season 1, still one of the best shows on TV.

I was less wowed by the musical episode, but like you I really appreciate them pushing the genre.  It didn't work as well as the first musical episode.  On the plus side, my kid LOVED it.

Finally caught up.
The show isn't perfect but like you have said before, I appreciate that they try new things.  The don't always work but I feel like they respect the audience a lot more than most TV out there, and they are willing to try to challenge the viewer.    I do wish the characters were a little more consistent from episode to episode but I love the way they are treating Julia's story arc from the second book.  This way feels much more earned and way less random.

I do have to called out the magnificent way the Fillory election played out though.

I think this is the show I enjoy watching most right now. It's not afraid to get dark, but always with just the right amount of humor and irony that it's not actually depressing. Reminds me a bit of Buffy in that way. Although tonight's episode was a bit of a downer. It kind of felt like they were wrapping up the series almost, but I was happy to read it's apparently (https://www.ibtimes.com/will-magicians-have-season-5-renewal-cancellation-details-2785902) renewed for another season.

Its not their best season, but even so it is still great TV.  This is probably the best fantasy show on TV right now.  It takes risks, and even when they don't pay off they still make it work well.  But whoo boy, when they do!

Anyway, I will miss him, but it is right for the show that it went the way it did.
