But NOT an energy source.  Thecatalyst is consumed, and it requires more energy to produce it than is released in the reaction. It might make a good energy storage medium for fuel cells, depending on the numbers.  Interesting that the energy is stored as galvanic potential, though...

Not disagreeing but wondering where you got that it took more energy to produce the catalyst than the reaction released.

From 1) basic understanding of the conservation of mass-energy and 2) comments on the video by the verified account for the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, which posted the original video.

First, it's not a catalyst, it is used in the reaction, the advantage of their process is precisely  that a catalyst is not needed.
Secondly even if their aluminium transformation was free, the whole process wouldn't be economically viable if their goal was simply to produce H².
At room temp, the reaction is  2 Al + 6 H20 -> 2 Al(OH)3 + 3 H2.
So, it give 3 mole of H2 per 2 mole of Al or about 0.111 kg of H2 per Kg of Al.
And the hydrogen isn't 9 times more expensive per kilo than Al.

This is pigheaded even for you.  They're oxidizing aluminum and using the energy produced to split water into hydrogen. Aluminum doesnt exist free in nature, so it has to be created.  You cannot, under any circumstance, get more energy out of oxidizing it than you put into extracting it; even if you start with pure aluminum oxide, you've got to electrolyze it in solution with molten cryolite at 1000°C, a process that Requires far more energy than it is possible to extract by oxidizing the resulting aluminum.

I have some code in a codebase that looks like that.  I'm working with a partner's API and there's a instantiation problem somewhere in their library.  So, I have to set a string value on their object before I set any of the other values, or none of them keep the value.  It's like the set call to them don't work unless something has been set to that string.  But I don't want that string to actually have a value.  So, my code sets that string, sets my other values, and then sets the string to empty.  I have a comment in my code like above to warn future developers.

The places I have gotten code from are sites where the person gave free permission to use.
That was the header part of my page. Only other thing I think I used was when I do a google search for how to force something to occur in html and that is mostly directions how to alter a "command" for a lack of a better term.

I just know that my experiences with early Celerons was bad. Don't know the nuts and bolts.
The funny thing is that my Netbook is a Celeron. Better choice than an Atom at least.

I wanted a netbook that could run 1080p video even if the display cannot display at 1080p.

In addition, the people at Intel decided not to support older Atom processors with Win 10 although even with Windows 7, it could not handle 1080p video.

Look, I lead a fairly scheduled life.  I wake up every weekday morning at 6AM (if I'm lucky) to get ready for work.  I go to work.  I get home almost every day by 6PM.  I fiddle fart on the computer here and there most evenings, an hour or more depending on if my wife is working that day or not (12 hour shifts means she gets home much later than I do).  At no point in the history of this fucking computer having Windows 10 on it have I been on the computer between the hours of say 1AM to 5AM.  Ever.  Why the fuck do you think I want to update at 6PM?  If you did it during the day I could forgive you since I'm only on in the daytime on the weekends.  But no, your AI scheduling fuckstick says 6PM is the time it will be least likely to upset my schedule.  Are you paying any goddamn attention at all?  Who wrote this motherfucker?  Did they use COBOL?  Are they saving active times in a fixed width text file somewhere and forgot how to parse the damn thing?


Also, don't present me with a link to pick a different time if you're just going to lock down the screen that lets me set a time.  Don't nag me every hour on the hour.  If I go fix a sandwich and come back to you rebooting for updates it makes me want to go back to Linux.

Examples are "the voter fraud problem" (far overblown) and healthcare/insurance/Medicaid fraud. If I were a younger man, I would go into "Big Data" auditing. The opportunities are huge.

My favorite story of audit disbelief is the Bernie Madoff fraud. A stock analyst with an auditing background proved Madoff was a fraud years before it was uncovered using a simple technique based on Benford's Law (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benford's_law) (one of my favorites) but the lawyers in the SEC didn't understand the math and wouldn't believe him.

I have a gen1 leap on my desk. I used to use it a lot on my Mac, but mouse gestures are more efficient in Windows, and the accurracy and lag are too much for serious use as a tool for creation or even most navigation. The ability to sense relative depth and obscure the moving virtual construct behind the moving opaque object is very impressive.

Recently on our office network we stopped being able to charge iPhones by plugging them into our workstations. Android users could continue to charge their phones in that way. Turns out the Lightning connectors for iPhones run power and data along the same channel, while Android chargers use separate channels. Blocking the data connection to iPhones (because security) therefore also blocked the power connection.

So yeah.

This is going to be more information than anybody has asked for, but I've worked in aviation software, and the language I used was...C!

There's actually good reason for using C for aviation software. If you use it for that purpose, C is completely deterministic. No garbage collection means you always know when your memory will be allocated (assuming you don't use malloc, which aviation software largely doesn't, static memory only). The level of testing and audits done on aviation software is quite robust. Every line of code MUST be tested, and full traceability must be established between requirements, code, and tests. That and every line must be reviewed by 2 different people. The FAA has a delightful document called DO-178B, which outlines all these procedures.

Ha ha, but in all seriousness, basically all operating systems are written in C. That includes kernel, system software, and also most embedded programs. (In case you wondered, that timer power supply I made a while back was programmed in C, AVR-GCC.)

C has no defined standard of how it multi-threads, or even how it atomically updates memory shared between threads/processes, other than being able to use volatile variables. You use the threading system defined by your OS via its API.

C++ also adds memory safety to all of its data structures (unless you do C-style stuff in it with void pointers or unions). An exception might still happen, but the system can catch an exception in a sub-module and restart it, or not, go into failsafe mode, whatever. The exception system doesn't have any more overhead than assert statements—exception checks like array bounds effective have zero cost on any modern CPU because of branch prediction. But when an exception does happen, you get something more useful than your program halting.

When we say embedded system, are we saying a computer-on-a-chip with a RTOS (Real-Time Operating System), or are we talking about microcontrollers where the embedded program itself is the only thing running. In the first case, exception handling can basically be implemented by breaking a system into processes, adding a hypervisor/watchdog process, etc.

Tablet technology seems to have stalled. Apple continues to play with the high end, and I like my Surface Pro in many ways, but Microsoft still doesn't have the tablet part down yet. My heaviest-used technology is an aging 8-inch Samsung tablet. I was hoping by now there would be a cheap Chromebook tablet available that would combine the best of the Android tablet experience with a functional computer, but I have not been impressed with the first offerings.

I bought one of the first Samsung cheap Chromebooks for the grandkids several years ago now and was impressed, but no one seems to be pushing the low end of the price-value scale.

I use a tablet for reading books and sometimes watching a movie. Anything else I have an Asus Celeron netbook. I actually really like the netbook and what I am answering you on. 

I have a Kindle fire which I was given, It is smaller than the 11 inch generic tablet
The generic tablet was just too big and also had a ton of bloatware on it   
Still, I don't like the walled garden of the Kindle. I had to sneak in an alternate book reading program because not in love with the Kindle book software. I also don't like that you can't just plug a flash drive in and watch a movie from it.
 
I am curious about Samsung tablets? Can you get one, even a older one, that does not need a wireless plan.
I assume that they had good enough specs to watch 1080 video even if not in 1080?
Third, how walled garden are they?

I had a printer that could plug in USB or Parallel. Had so many problems with USB that for many years I did not trust USB for printers.   

Also had a friend who bought from Radio Shack an early USB only computer (probably Win 98SE) and had trouble with even his mouse and keyboard.

Now though there are few issues with USB and everything connects via USB

I loved this. Back in the era of this photo I went to visit a software contractor working on a project for my company, and I asked to meet the programmer I was primarily communicating with on the project. They hesitated, saying he did not like to be disturbed while working. Turns out that he had voluntarily moved himself into an unfinished alcove underneath a stairwell with a single light hanging in order to "get into the coding zone." Brilliant guy, but would probably be diagnosed today with Aspergers.

It's a 1980s word processor (https://www.ebay.co.uk/bhp/word-processor). My own phone is installed with a word processor app, though I hardly ever use it.

And no, the phone can't print hard copies unless I connect to a network with a printer. Congratulations on pointing out that something in this silly Internet meme is not 100% accurate.

I don't think I've ever heard an American pronounce that word as "epic" and I've lived here nearly 40 years.  Granted, it doesn't come up in conversation very often, but I've always said "epoque" and never had anybody ask me what I meant.  Maybe it's regional.

Being reminded of how long it can take to replace transformers, I wonder if we'll be more or less vulnerable to things like solar flares with distributed power production. Depending on if it means more critical components that can be fried and have to be replaced before things can get up and running again.

Because the mining process isn't guaranteed to give you a coin, the more miners there are in operation globally, the less likely it is that any one of them will get a coin. This will bring the price of bitcoin back up, though it'll still be pretty darn volatile.

I wonder if that'll bring down the price of GPUs any. I'd like an upgrade (I have a set of VR goggles that won't work on the 780 in my desktop), but the new generation of NVidia's top models is ridiculously expensive compared to previous generations.

Nah. We went with HD-BaseT over CAT6. Came down to money, mostly. We're using Crestron wall plates front and back of house feeding the projector directly (no matrix switch), with analog audio being fed back to the sound booth from the projector. The projector has 1 x HD-BaseT input; the other feed will be converted to HDMI. The wall plates and converter can handle up to 4K @ 60Hz.

For comparison, we're replacing a 13 year-old, 3200-lumen SVGA (800x600) LCD projector.  A 6000-lumen UXGA (1920x1200) laser DLP projector ought to last us some time, I should think.

Well, for readability, the python interpreter (https://docs.python.org/2/tutorial/floatingpoint.html) prints a rounded value for a float by default (17 significant decimals by default), which is less precise than the value that it has in memory, so a rounding error can occur there. The actual value for 0.1 + 0.2 is:

Well, it's a result of the floating point precision of the calculation, which is dependent upon the language.  Other languages run on the same processor will give different results for the sum of 0.1 and 0.2, both with greater or lesser precision. Perl6, for instance, stores such decimals as quotients of 64-bit integers and so will give precise results for the calculation. The particular result 0.30000000000000004 is not unique to Python (C flavors, Java, and many others use the same default precision).

As werecow points out, one can use the decimal module if one wants arbitrary precision in Python.

I, too, went down the Niue rabbit-hole. They are an interesting nation, and apparently petitioned Queen Victoria for protection and were willingly annexed in 1901. Through the proceeds of their .nu domain registry they offer free WiFi to the entire island and free fiber-optic ADSL connections for the government. Backhaul is satellite.

Looking at population figures of many of these small islands is sad; Niue once supported over 5000 inhabitants, but now more than 90% of Niueans live abroad.

On the Mac we had Marathon, which was later ported to other platforms. Microsoft was so impressed with the guys that made that they hired them to do Halo and help develop the X-Box.

I played TIE Fighter and its expansions. It came out after X-Wing, so it was a little smoother and had a few more features. A friend of mine somehow got his hands on a mission editor, and we had a lot of fun making missions for each other.

I've always been terrible with joysticks. They're cool for the added immersion but I can't aim straight to save my life (literally!). Mice all the way for me. One of the reasons why I'll never own a console with one of those thumb controllers.

One of my first computers as a teenager was very capricious, giving me blue screens several times a day. I used to have fits of rage when my work got corrupted for the umpteenth time or I lost my save game, and I would smack the shit out of it (figuring it was basically a piece of junk already anyway). Luckily I was kind of a weak kid physically, so I did surprisingly little damage. The side got a bit dented after a while, but even factoring in my lack of strength, I guess it must've been a hell of a lot sturdier than that one.

The only conversations that they are listening to are what you say after “Alexa,” and the immediate back and forth with the device. There is an entirely different system that listens for the activation word then activates Alexa.

I know many people who are sure that their phones are always listening to them.  I tried and tried to get my phone to show some evidence of this.  Not only did I never get any confirmation, even when I want my phone to listen to me it often gets the answers completely wrong.  Siri is often an idiot.

This is related to an issue I have with environmentalists.

When California and the US set emission standards and goals for autos, they put the highest priority on getting the lowest emissions or zero emissions in as many vehicles.

And that's a fine goal, but, it may have been better to pursue a fleet wide reduction in emissions.

The difference being large vehicles, especially SVUs and Trucks.

A hybrid design could boost mileage of one of these big vehicles more than the hybrid mileage boost that a smaller car gets.

But their goal isn't just to reduce emissions, it's also to encourage people to buy smaller cars.

Some people need larger vehicles and in many cases they can be more efficient than smaller vehicles.

And a large number of consumers prefer large vehicles but would happily buy them with hybrid systems. (Right now the only ones available are already high priced, and the hybrid system adds significantly to the prices and there's not government rebate of subsidy available).

So if manufacturers could build the hybrid vehicles many of their customers want (in addition to the one's they're building now) there would be a greater reduction in emissions overall.

There are no plugin electric trucks available in the US.  I did see an article about one that's supposed to come out soon that looks amazing, but out of my price range.

The batteries are all slung down at the tire level in a skateboard design, leaving the front engine compartment as a trunk, with enough bed space to lay down sheets of plywood.  Claiming 400+ miles to a charge, 11k pound towing capacity, 0-60 in 3 seconds.  They have an SUV model as well with similar specs.  Price estimate is around $70k.

I think Ford has F150 hybrids coming to the market next year.  I'm not really wanting a hybrid, I'd rather make the jump to just electric. 


I honestly don't need a truck, but would prefer a small SUV type vehicle.  I'm driving a Hyundai Santa Fe right now and it suits my needs well enough.  If the wife and I take shopping trips up to Lexington or Louisville it gives us enough storage and it's pretty comfortable.  I'd like something in that size or a little smaller that's just electric if I could find/afford it.  The Kona looks nice but has a pretty short range of ~250 miles.  That puts me running out of juice about the time I would hit Asheville from here not including going over the mountains.  I'd really prefer something greater than 300.

I didn't watch the whole thing, but I'm guessing you have to get someone to certify that it's road legal after all that? Interesting proof of concept, at least.

Ideally people only drive as big a car as they need to. The more of you there are who share the vehicles, the easier it should be to have different ones for different needs and leave the big cars unused for more of the time. Not that services like Uber and Lyft really help when they lead to more people using cars instead of mass transit (or staying at home more, which is also a valid alternative).

I bought a car recently and it was down to a compact or a station wagon, and I can borrow a bigger car on the rare occasions that I need it, so that made the choice easier. Also the station wagon had a cigarette smell to it. It's almost like it was on show only to make the compact seem like a better deal.

I have not taken one forever but one problem I had with carbon footprints "tests" is that they will "penalize" you for more than one vehicle. Let us say that you have a small compact car as your regular drive car but a truck that mostly sits but you use it for cargo carrying.

You are only driving one at a time and in the case of the truck, it mostly just sits in the situation I describe.

I have a pickup - gets about 15 mpg, but I average less than 3000 miles per year - real calculation over the 14 years I've owned it. Year 2018 I put a total of 250 gallons of gas in it.  I propose higher gasoline taxes to make high mileage drivers pay more (and choose higher efficiency vehicles) rather than higher efficiency standards to make the rest of us (who don't have much of an impact) pay.

Which is why an emissions tax should be combined with something akin to a universal basic income program. E.g. you could pay out the money collected from tax evenly distributed, which would be a far more significant benefit for those with the smallest incomes and consumption levels.

Or if it turns out that the job structure they're stuck in is really inefficient (polluting), like driving between multiple jobs, it could free them up to quit and find a single job for a better ROI.

Presumably, they have the effect of an upward pressure on fuel economy to those that are buying vehicles new, compared to what would otherwise make sense to the buyer. Arguably, this is one of the main benefits, at least to whomever is going to own it next. The real question is what level of carbon tax would produce an efficiency pressure similar to CAFE. There might not be a good answer to that, since fleet fuel economy is computed by auto manufacturer, and they also have different targets per vehicle size.

No. You have it wrong, but I am sure you will engage in an extended argument that misses the point and moves the goalposts.

Just know this is a completely wrong statement, and makes no fucking sense if you think about when wind and solar is available.  They are in no way an on demand power source.  Hydro is only partially that, and only for a limited time, and is always much better used as a baseline rather than draining the resvoir to meat a peak demand.

Even if it were true, it's irrelevant where the power for bitcoin mining comes from. The Bitcoin system is still an enormous waste of energy, diverted from productive ends toward idle gambling, and illegal, untaxed, and/or frivolous monetary transactions.
