Title: I make beautiful things by hitting them with hammers! I am a blacksmith
Post by: ArtistCeleste on September 06, 2018, 01:46:03 AM
Hi there,

I have been looking for conversations with more critical thinkers, so I thought I'd introduce myself. I am an artist blacksmith. I shape steel for a living. I also work in copper, brass, bronze, aluminum and stainless. I do mostly architectural and ornamental work.

Feel free to ask me about what I do, or share what you do.

Welcome! I know a few blacksmiths, and I follow Alec Steele's channel on YouTube closely. I've had a few swings of the hammer myself, but I've never had the resources to do it seriously.

Where are you? Blacksmith organizations abound. If you are in the US look into ABANA.

We are a small but fierce community.

I'm in the deep south. The very deep south. The below-the-equator-and-on-the-other-side-of-the-world deep south.

Okay, Australia.

Welcome aboard!  Your work is amazing!  I've never had the opportunity to do it myself, but I've become addicted to watching knife and sword makers online and on TV lately.  Hell, I get really engaged watching farriers working too.  There's just something about the planning and logic mixed with the skill to pull it off that just endlessly fascinates me.  I look forward to seeing more of your stuff and chatting with you too!

Closest I've come to the forge was making leather aprons for a smith.

Anecdote: In film class at Uni we were viewing very old shorts, some of the oldest footage available. One showed three men pounding on an anvil. After we watched it the prof asked if we had any comments.

ME: The guy in the middle is the boss.

PROF: How do you know that?

ME: He's swinging the smallest hammer.

Thank you everyone.

Bladesmithing draws people in, but it's about 10% forging and about 90% fit and finish. If you really love jewelry making you would likely also love Bladesmithing. Machining too.

I do know a really awesome professional Bladesmith. He makes his blades from Crucible steel which he smelts from sand on a beach. Pretty awesome stuff.

I don't know which one you are talking about, but yes I did.

If it's the one with the scrolls that was my very first one.
