Title: Favorites of 2018
Post by: Sawyer on December 06, 2018, 08:38:15 PM
Started a book that I won't finish until January, so I think that means it's time for another favorites list.

Fiction
Golem and Jinni by Helene Wecker
Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
Wyrd Sisters and Moving Pictures were my favorite Discworld novels so far, out of 1-12.

General Non-Fiction
Annals of the Former World by John McPhee
Bad Blood by John Carreyrou
a few really good essays in The Flamingo's Smile by Stephen Jay Gould

Aneurysm-Inducing Books on Politics and Current Events
The Burger Court and the Rise of the Judicial Right by Michael Graetz and Linda Greenhouse
One Person, No Vote by Carol Anderson
Crash Overdrive by Zoe Quinn

And an honorable mention to Sean Carroll, Terry Pratchett, and Neal Stephenson, who along with Jonathan Blow almost broke the part of my brain that understands time and causality last March.

I loved "The Golem and the Djinni", (it's spelt differently outside the US) and Wyrd Sisters

My favourites that I read in 2018:
Fiction:
An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon
The Bobiverse trilogy by Dennis E. Taylor
The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson
Jade City by Fonda Lee

Graphic Novels:
Saga by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples
Paper Girls by Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang
The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore

There have been so many... The ongoing saga of Girl Genious has been a real pleasure to read with my daughter. We're up to 2004, I think.

I lied.  I squeezed in one more Discworld book.

Small Gods joins my elite 10/10 club.  Not sure if it's my favorite Discworld, but I absolutely love Pratchett's mixture of subtle and hit-you-over-the-head critiques of religion.

Good Omens is my favorite book, bar none. Small Gods is one of my favourite in the Discworld. Overall I think the City Watch books are my favorite saga, followed by the Industrial Revolution books. Granny Weatherwax is my favourite character, with Rincewind coming a close second, and Death in third place.

From the Good Omens wiki:

"Amazon.com announced that Gaiman will adapt Good Omens into a "comedic apocalyptic" miniseries, set to be released on Prime Video in 2019. The adaption will be a six-part limited comedy series for Amazon and the BBC, and Gaiman will also serve as showrunner. On 14 August 2017 Michael Sheen and David Tennant were announced as having been cast in the lead roles of Aziraphale and Crowley respectively in the forthcoming miniseries."
