Title: Is "Game of Thrones" the greatest TV show of all time?
Post by: CarbShark on April 11, 2019, 01:49:52 PM

Is ‘Game of Thrones’ TV’s greatest show of all time? Yes, it is - Los Angeles Times (https://www.latimes.com/entertainment/tv/la-et-st-game-of-thrones-greatest-tv-show-ever-20190411-story.html)

Quote
“What is the best show ever?’ and the answer is easy: “Game of Thrones.”
There are television series that more people have watched, that more people have loved, series that have more specifically aided our growth as a society, better showcased a single performance or more clearly set a template for other shows to follow.
But “Game of Thrones,” adapted for HBO by D.B. Weiss and David Benioff from the book series by George R.R. Martin, is, and will possibly remain, the only television series that can be truly described as epic.
No other series has ever built such a deeply detailed and far-flung world, with a geography as varied as its social constructs, religions, languages. No other series has propelled such a massive yet impeccably individualized cast through such an impossibly intricate cat’s cradle of story lines that honestly should have collapsed long ago but didn’t.

This is not really an objective question, is it? At the very least you have to wait until it's finished, but ideally until it's been rerun as much as any other show you want to compare it to.

Even then, it will never be objective. It's an entirely subjective question.

How could you really compare GoT, against, say, Twin Peaks anyway?  Unless there are objective criteria, like number of trophies won or fastest mph in sports, the question isn't just subjective; it's meaningless.

What's the greatest TV show? Highest audience figures? Highest percent critical acclaim?

I can never make lists of e.g. favourite books or music, because I can't rank them even in my own mind.

Never mind that comparing anything from one era to another is fraught with problems.

Over the first seven seasons, GAME OF THRONES received: a total of 132 Emmy® nominations and 47 wins; seven Golden Globe nominations and one win; 18 SAG Award nominations and seven wins; 17 Critics’ Choice Award nominations and one win; and seven AFI award wins.

There are probably shows that have more nominations and wins. But that shouldn't be the only criteria, at least not in my subjective book.

Nope

It is the best show on TV right now.

What series that came before GoT is as great?

Breaking Bad.

Where Game if Thrones sits in the greatest shows of all times will depend a lot on how it handles the last season and particularly how they finish it off.

Something 'Lost', 'Battlestar Galactica' and many other great shows couldn't do. They just fizzled out and left many viewers disappointed.

I agree GOT is the best show on TV at the moment.

No way. The series have been going downhill very fast since season 3 and by now, the writing is completely incoherent and characterisation is crazy inconsistent. The most recent season was objectively terrible.

It also turned a grounded story with consequences into a high fantasy schlock were the plucky heroes are saved in the last second if they screw up instead of g tting killed.

Also, it is rich to credit the show for the worls building that was done by the author of the books.

The best show on tv right now is probably The Good Place.

There are dozens of shows that I've felt compelled to watch all the way through upon watching 1-3 episodes.  GoT is not among them.  (There are also dozens of fantasy series I've felt compelled to finish after reading 1-2 books.  ASoIaF is not one of them.)

By that standard, I'm pretty comfortable answering "No".

It was until season 6. But season 7 was abismal. Completely off character for most of the characters. Characters surviving situations that would have killed them in earlier seasons, and a ton of situations that happened "just Because".

One series that started out great but dropped off after a number of seasons is "Walking Dead."

I'd say GoT hasn't dropped off nearly as much.

Yes, but unlike GoT, it does not go against the world that was previously built.

Plucky heroes getting away with crap is fine in itself. But you can't have a show that starts in a harsh, semi-realistic manner where mistakes are punished hard by other players and then have the Battle of the Bastards.

It is the best show on TV right now.

What series that came before GoT is as great?

Barney Miller
All in the Family
MASH
Twilight Zone
Masterpiece Theater
Saturday Night Live
Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman
Hill Street Blues
Sesame Street
The Muppets
Mr Rogers
Rockford files
Cheers
The Simpsons
Twin Peaks
and on and on and on

You cant compare todays TV to 70s TV when we only had 3 channels and PBS. Or any other time period. What is "the greatest"?  I don't know but its not GOT and I say this while being one of its biggest fans but if I had a choice between GOT and Breaking Bad, BB would win.

Shit no.  Better call Saul is spanking GoT's ass everyday of the week. GoT is not even the best show on the air right now.  I doubt it's even in the top five.  But I sure do love it.

I think its on a top list but I personally place it below GOT and most of the others (HBO stuff) I know some people think its the best HBO show, just not me.

From an obsessive fan who was in heaven with every episode of season 1, I now dont really care when the new season starts, other than to see how it ends and get it over with.
Im the same with the books at this point.

It is not fair to compare GoT to older shows, but we aren't talking about fairness.  If you compare GoT to Hill Street Blues without regard to when it was made, then GoT is definitely "greater".  If we compare them based on other shows that existed during the time, then yeah, it has a ton of competition.

Based on what people have said here, it looks like GoT definitely isn't the best TV show of all time.  I think maybe it is the most epic TV show of all time when it comes to the scope of it, but that doesn't mean it is the best.

They better not screw up the ending, though, or it will go down as the biggest fail of all time.

I completely disagree with that. In no way is GOT greater than Hill Street, every show I mentioned above was much greater than GOT.

Also Sesame street is way more epic than GOT (also much less rapey)

50 years on the air, 77 million people watched the show as children by 2008. 86% of all kindergartners watch it daily.

Im not sure if my math is correct. GOT has a 16 million record but if 86% of the 74 million children in the US (not to mention everywhere else) watch SS that's 63,640,000 viewers in the US.

I'm a sesame seed and proud of it, Both Gordon and Susan explained this to me when I was 10, anyone born in 1969 who watched the show. We were the first to grow up with it.

HBO is running past seasons on a daily basis leading up to the season premiere.

Just randomly tuning in for a few moments every now and then I'm noticing so much more detail and foreshadowing in the early seasons than the first time around. I'm thinking I may just try to watch the whole thing from start to finish once it's done.

That's what what we did to get ready for season 8. I forgot so much, and yes so much foreshadowing. I remember the first go around thinking some season where weak, but think I was just expecting something different. Upon second viewing everything seemed to flow a lot more cohesively and didn't have any seasons I didn't like. Or maybe it's conditioning? Don't know, don't care, digging it.

At least in the universe of commenters here.

But even then, there seems to be no consensus as to what one show would be the greatest. So GoT may not get a majority of people thinking it’s the greatest, but it probably gets way more votes than any other show.

Legend of the Seeker  ;) (Just kidding)

It is a genre that hasn't been done well on TV. Though there have been a few "good" fantasy series over the years. GOT is by far the best.

The Magicians
Shannara Chronicles
Once Upon a Time
Buffy
Supernatural
Xena
Grimm
Penny Dreadful
American Gods

Unless there are objective criteria, like number of trophies won or fastest mph in sports, the question isn't just subjective; it's meaningless.

What's the greatest TV show? Highest audience figures? Highest percent critical acclaim?

I'd say it's subjective either way. Because even the question of which objective features you choose to measure, ultimately boils down to a subjective question of what you value in a TV show.

By extension, whether a given opinion is "meaningless" is also a subjective judgment. For example, my mom's favorite TV show might be a subjective judgement according to her point of view; but that bit of knowledge is not "meaningless" to her friends and family.

I can never make lists of e.g. favourite books or music, because I can't rank them even in my own mind.

Never mind that comparing anything from one era to another is fraught with problems.

I have the same problem. Not sure I quite understand the obsession with ranking artistic works in the first place. My rankings would change from time to time, depending on my current moods and interests.

You stole the words right out of my snout. I think these are probably my two favorite shows of all time (maybe Buffy as well, and increasingly The Magicians), but it's hard to compare them and say that one is better than the other. I like both for entirely different reasons.

I just binge-watched the last season. I didn't find it nearly as bad as some people made it out to be.
