Title: Hitler’s normal voice
Post by: bachfiend on August 19, 2019, 10:07:40 PM
For your amusement, here’s a recording of that monster’s normal voice, recorded at a meeting with Mannerheim in Finland in 1942:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hitler_and_Mannerheim_recording

I discovered it rereading Ian Kershaw’s Hitler biography.

How is this amusing?

It’s a change from Hitler’s usual ranting.  Bruno Ganz used it rehearsing for ‘der Untergang.’  ‘Amusement’ in the sense of ‘trivia to add to a collection.’  It’s unique, in that it’s the only recording of Hitler’s normal voice.

I read that as well, I just don't see how it's in any way funny. Interesting maybe, but not funny.

I thought you were just using the rule of threes to make it funny.

How is this amusing?

Most of his speeches, especially early on, were all unamplified. Maybe by habit or venue, the most popular recordings of him had still him speaking in such a voice, even by the time he was "popular" enough to have a microphone. It sounds funny to modern ears, it adds to the cartoon villain quality jumping out of the history pages, but that is how one had to speak to carry their voice. Actual conversational voice was rather different.

‘Amusement’ doesn’t just include ‘being funny’ in its definition:

https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/amusement

It also includes ‘entertainment.’

I'm aware of the definition, but in my mind I cannot separate the "or made to laugh" part. Regardless, listening to anything Hitler said for "entertainment" does not sound, uh... good.

You’ve got a pretty one track mind.  Entertainment has other meanings too:

How is your knowledge of spoken German?  Did you get anything out of it besides tone and cadence?

Hitler was an appalling monster, and many of his utterances, including his reported ones in private amongst his acolytes, were disgusting.  I find Hitler’s utterances just as ‘entertaining’ as Trump’s.  At least Hitler has the advantage that he’s dead.

If it's so disgusting, why do you bother?

You know, say what you like about Hitler, but you have to admit - he did kill Hitler.
