Title: What's Your Daily Driver (Computer)?
Post by: The Latinist on August 21, 2019, 11:19:30 PM
I'm always curious what people choose to use as their primary computer.  So let's hear it!

Ground rules:

1. If the computer you use most belongs to your employer, list that one.

2. If you own or use more than one computer, feel free to share.  But please identify the one you use most often.

3. Give us the applicable specs, please! Brand, Model, Processor, RAM, GFX Card, Storage, Resolution, OS, etc.

I'll get us started:

My employer-provided laptop:

2019 Apple MacBook Pro 15" (MV902LL/A).
CPU: Intel Core i7-9750H @ 2.6 GHz (6-cores, 12-threads)
GPU 1: Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB
GPU 2: AMD Radeon Pro 555X 4 GB GDDR5
RAM: 16 GB 2400 MHz DDR4
Storage: 256 GB Apple PCIe/NVME SSD
Display: 15.4-inch (2880 x 1800)

The computer I use most often is the latest iPad Pro, with the 1 TB storage, which I’m unlikely to fill before it goes obsolete (but then again, you can’t have too much storage).

I have a laptop and a desktop (both Apple), which I haven’t used for months, if not years.

1. Mycroft Holmes III "Mike"  :
Chassis: Be Quiet "Dark Base" 900 full tower (BEST CASE EVER MADE!)
Power: Corsair AX1200
MB: ASUS P9x79 pro
CPU: Intel core I7-3820 @ 3.60ghz
RAM: 64gb DDR3
GPU1: EVGA Geforce GTX 1080 classified
GPU2: EVGA Geforce GTX 1080 classified
Storage: 250gb Samsung pro SSD (OS), 500gb Samsung pro SSD (playback), 128gb Samsung pro SSD (adobe swap), 2tb Seagate barracuda HDD (working drive), 4tb Seagate Desktop HDD (storage)

This is my main computer, it fits on my cart for work and it acts as my gaming machine at home.  Its pointless to list all my displays, I use two asus 1080 screens at home, while at work it could be any number of things. It ran a large portion of Mission control in Venom (everything but the big screen which we ran from a more advanced media server)

edit: Mike is getting old, his ram is failing and he is starting to feel his age, I cant upgrade the ram without upgrading the MB and so on, I expect Mycroft Holmes IV will be built the next time I get a big gig.

2. Dora II:
Macbook pro mid 2015
2.5ghz I7
16gb ram
AMD radeon r9
500gb SSD

The laptop that is always with me

3. Gay Deceiver:
Zotac ZBox mini
I cant remember exact specs, its an I7 with 16gb ram and a 500gb SSD

I use this on set more than any other playback computer, its powerful yet small enough to fit behind a TV and light enough to stick on with Velcro.  Its about the size of a mac mini but much lighter.

I'm going to stop there, I have at least 5 more that I use on a regular basis and several collecting dust for backups. Almost all of them are named after a Heinlein computers.

12.9‑inch iPad Pro (1st generation)
I use a stand that I 3d printed to hold it in portrait most of the time.
My keyboard is the excellent Logitech k380.

When I'm running about I often just take my phone Pixel 2XL with the keyboard and stand. It's large enough to do quite a lot of writing on, especially since I touch type.

Several year old Mac Mini with 2tb “Fusion Drive”. Normally driving 2 monitors.

Most of my time is spent on an iPad Mini 2 with cellular activated - I’m on that now via cellular - and an iPad Air2 for when I have WiFi at home in GA.

Most used:

iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, Late 2015)
Processor 3.1 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory 8 GB 1867 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200 1536 MB
Drive: 251 GB flash storage, presently a hair over half full.

I also have a first-gen 12.9-inch 128 GB iPad Pro that I use mostly for media.
Before I moved into a house that had a large-screen TV already installed, I used the iPad for watching Amazon Prime Video. Now I use it mostly for watching YouTube, most often music. There are a lot of remarkably good classical musicians there.

I have a first-gen iPad Air which I don't use much since I got the bigger iPad. And somewhere (unless it got lost in the move) I should still have my iPad Mini, also first gen, which was my travel computer (because of its light weight) before I got the Air. The Air then became my travel computer but I don't anticipate traveling much anymore.

And I have a very old iPod which I mostly use for podcasts, and which also has my music collection. It connects to a small BT speaker which has good enough audio quality for my 71-year-old ears.

ASUS Prime Z390-A
Intel Core i7-9700K
24 GB 2133 MHz DDR4 RAM
Samsung 860 EVO 500GB SSD
2 1 TB Seagate Barracudas
Samsung 27" CH711 curved monitor (main viewscreen)
Samsung 24" S24E450D flat monitor (mounted vertically, for code)

1. Dell Venue 7140 Tablet with keyboard -
Windows 10
M-5Y71 Processor (Has better specs than my old Phenom N970 processor while using something like 10% of the power)
Intel HD 5300 Graphics
8 GB of Ram
256 GB SSD and a low profile 256 GB flash drive

These days I seem to be using it the most. Lasts a long time on batteries (8 to 12 hours) and better perfomance than a lot of older laptops. Still, I prefer a full sized laptop and /or desktop

2. ASUS G751JL 17.3-Inch Gaming Laptop
Windows 10
i7 4720HQ
GTX 965M
16 GB of Ram
1 480 GB SSD and 1 TB hard drive

In some ways I actually like it better than my desktop :)

3. Main Desktop
Windows 10
FX 8350 Processor
GTX 970 video card (Upgraded from an HD 7850)
8 GB of ram
1 TB SSD, 2 4 TB hard drives

Get to use it when I am actually home.

4. TV Server
Windows 10
Athlon 5350 processor
R7 240 video card
8 GB ram
1 500 GB hard drive and 2 3 TB hard drives.
