Title: Hurricane Season 2019
Post by: Soldier of FORTRAN on August 29, 2019, 09:58:18 PM
Seems like with noteworthy weather every few months, we could just use a general 'weather' thread.

Today's Event: Hurricane Dorian.  Currently forming in the Caribbean with a gnarly trajectory

And here's the absolute best model:

I read today that the depicted cone, "the cone of uncertainty," is a 60–65% probability region for the center of the storm.  So there is a 35–40% probability that the center of the storm will be outside the cone.  And that's just the center of the storm.  Given the diameter of a hurricane, the region that is at risk has got to be at least four times as wide as the cone.

In general think generic catch all threads are a bad idea and dislike them. After they grow a little it makes looking for things so much harder. I like each thread being about a specific thing and not "all weather, forever". I don't see any befit to lumping them all together when there probably won't be much over lap anyways but having different threads for each storm/issue makes searching much easier.

Renamed to, "Hurricane Dorian."  Probably not enough interest/news for a general weather thread.

Hope any of you in the region are hunkered down and prepared!

FWIW, as somewhat of a weather geek, I would be interested in a general weather thread.

From about 9:50 to 12:30 is real interesting.  Uses some tools I've never seen before to show atmospheric currents and storm structure to explain a couple different model's differing tracks.

Get the Navy to drop ice in the ocean to cool it off!!!  ;D ::)

Fascinating!

So if the Navy were able to cool the ocean, apparently it would drive the hurricane ashore, causing more damage even though the winds would be weaker. Not only is the icy guy suggesting the impossible, but if his suggestion were possible, it would be worse than doing nothing.

Holy shit. Normally when you're hit by a hurricane, you can be assured that it will move on to somewhere else eventually, but it's just sitting there.

To be fair, he could have gone "Under my presidency, we have the strongest hurricanes and the highest wind speeds so far. In fact, Obama didn't have one Category 5 hurricane. A lot of hurricanes say that they love me. I am very popular."

Negative. There have been three Cat 5 hurricanes since 2017 including one, Michael, that made landfall in Florida as a Cat 5.

The Principle of Charity is noble but, like spacetime inside a black hole, is ultimately meaningless with Trumpspeak.

I was in Wilmington NC this past weekend visiting family and really hope that area doesn't get hit to hard. Florence hit them bad though mostly recovered now. Due to being in a drought now heard that should help reduce the likelihood of as much flood damage happening again but we shall see. I'd love for it to change course and come to DC with reduced winds but heavy rain, my lawn could use it :D

Yeah, I was surprised when I heard that it was battering Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. I guess it moved pretty quickly after it hit the Carolinas--and stayed pretty far off shore so that the Mid Atlantic and New England coast were not hardly affected other than waves and riptides.

Yup almost half the province didn't have power. Ours went for 12 hours. It didn't seem that bad where I live but I couldn't go to work Monday due to roof damage on our building. There's a pretty crazy video circulating of a crane in Halifax toppling onto a building which was being constructed.
