Title: Ric Ocasek Dead at 75
Post by: PANTS! on September 15, 2019, 09:52:15 PM
He was one of the underappreciated greats.  I really love the Cars early power pop.  Not much compares to the jaunty infectiousness of Shake It Up.  He went on to become an awesome producer, too.  So long man.  You will be missed.

Holy crap he must have been young. 50's?

Edit: ok just saw he was 75. It seem that he was found dead in his apartment.

Since they were such a presence in the 80s people forget that they actually were originally from the late 70s.  The bulk of their hits (and non hits they are known for) came from their S/T album in '78, and Candy-O in 79.

The three songs opening The Cars sure as shit sound very 80s, and at the same time it is very much late 70s power pop too.  They were very prescient.   Songs like Moving In Stereo are like a blueprint for New Wave electronica.  And that Keyboard solo on Just what I Needed is that jaunty peppy new wave pop that didn't really break until 82 or so.

Even so, they all were pretty "old" when they formed the cars.  Late 20s, early 30s.  (Except for Elliot Easton, who was 10 years younger.)

I have at least one Cars album on vinyl somewhere...

Haven't quite managed to get my old turntable working. Forgot that my old amp had a build in pre-amp, and the one I picked up for the mancave doesn't. So I need a preamp.... I'll get round to it one day.

I was still a teenager when their early hits came out and Let's Go was a particular favourite.

That's a bummer.  I really didn't like The Cars at first, but came to appreciate the music, after being forced to listen by my roommate.  They were a solid band.
