AFK isn't that bad. I had an e-friend who wrote BAK. And I asked what it meant...it means back! WHAT. You can't type an extra letter?!

No. This is probably their private skype chat.

There was one time about 8 months ago where they recorded an episode and  a few of them were in the SGU chat on stickam at the same time, but I think it only happened once.

The first time I saw someone use FTW was in a chatroom at work (we use chat to communicate among teams in different locations). While I was growing up, though, FTW meant something else (T & W meant 'the' and 'world' respectively, you can deduce what F meant), so I found it an odd thing to say. Later I brought it up with my coworker (he's younger than me and I sorta look out for him, so I didn't want him getting in trouble with management) and we had a good laugh once we both realized what was going on.

I will sometimes consciously say Be-Arr-Be when I leave my desk, but that's just because it drives my coworkers nuts. We're all nerds, though, so it's all very self-referential.

I've noticed that female nerds often call their male nerd friends "nerds," but that male nerds rairly refer to their male nerd friends as "nerds."  Anyone else notice this?

I can only offer my personal experience on the subject: male nerds in general don't call me "nerd" but I think that's because I'm not as nerdy as them. My co-hosts have (I believe) called me nerd or geek but it's rare. My non-nerdy friends, both male and female, have been known to yell nerrrrrrrd when I occasionally go overboard with the science or trivia or math. They say it with love, though.

My hypothesis on why males don't refer to females as nerds has more to do with male/female dynamics.  When it's just my male friends and I, we will, on occasion, go out of our way to try and offend the sensibilities of each other.  When there's a female in the group, that doesn't happen.  Dunno if this is due to a caveman attractive force (not worth the risk of pushing them away) or some vestige of chivalry (somehow I doubt that) or something.

Today a friend and I laughed at a reference to Darmok and Jalad at Tenagra.  Whilst you may not be up to that level of pathetic-ness, from what I've heard, you're still, to break my hypothesis from my previous post, a nerd.

I work a bunch of fairly nerdy guys (I'm in IT), and I'm probably nerdier than most of them.  When they call me nerd it's done with affection, and honestly I'd have a hard time disputing it (as an example I know way too much about Doctor Who and other British science fiction TV. And no, I'm not British, which seems to make that tidbit even nerdier). Luckily for me by this point in my life I'm quite happy and comfortable with the label, and I think it makes me more interesting.  I'm a nerd, out and proud!  Still, if I'm getting the nerd label from nerdy guys, I sometimes feel like the non-nerd mainstream views me as a different species altogether.

I wholly agree that nerdy girls are hot. My crushes have a statistically significant tendency towards nerdy brunettes with glasses.

Post by: Hanes on March 03, 2008, 02:28:59 PM
I may have inadvertently implied that the label of "nerd" is a bad thing.  This was not my intent.  While I'm not a fan of broad labels, despite their recognized necessity at times, I wouldn't be, and am not, offended by being called a nerd.  Furthermore, I realize that any term, can be used at a term of affection, and nerd is no different (Ma has been known to say "you little shit" in reference to me).  Conotation is more important that denotation.

I'd love to get into a discussion of labels and naming rights, but I think that's beyond the scope of this thread.

Here's what I hate about Danica...

I saw her book on math for young girls at Barnes & Noble and thought it sounded like a great idea. Then I actually looked at the book.

Check out the bottom right of the book:

I looked through the book, and it's an actual f*ing horoscope. [/img]

My impersonation that makes Rebecca LOL must remain a secret for now.  However, I'll give you all a hint:  the impression has already been snuck in to one of the shows.

As far as "geek-speak" goes, us fellas are slowly softening Rebecca up to acceptance, and more importantly, appreciation of the brevity that is "on-line-game-chat." (AFK, BRB, BIO, GFY, and so forth)

The next step in our evil ...  I mean our benevolent plans is to get Rebecca to buy a MMP game and join us in the fantasy realm of her choice:  WOW, COH, COV, LOTRO, or maybe even AOC!

The first one to correctly identify all the games by their initials wins a voucher for unlimited kisses from The Skepchick Kissing Booth that is being erected at TAM6!  Or a coupon to Denny's for a grand slam breakfast (with bacon) - your choice!

Sorry, your guess is wrong.  You must identify them all correctly. One guess per listener.

I was most sincere in my last post what the prizes are.

I'll give you all another hint (or maybe a correction to Evan's hint).  Not just one show, but 2. ;)

JAY: Then guys, why am I allergic to some soap but not others?
ME: Because of inactive ingredients, like a fragrance or a dye.
STEVE: Yeah, that's basically all there is to it, inactive ingredients.
JAY: Oh. Well you know I'm allergic to those spermicides . . .
STEVE: Really?
JAY: Yeah Steve, you remember. That time you helped me . . .
ME: Oh Jesus, that's sick

Spermicidal Soap?  That's a terrible product idea.  Who would use soap as a birth control?  Or is this for people who sometimes find themselves completely covered in sperm and want to make sure they kill it all before the come into contact with others?

I have to stay away from these online games because it would be the end of my job and life as I know it. I tried it once and got seriously addicted. It's all very sad. Find it hard to believe how Dr Novella has the time for all this though. I'm guessing he now just has a group of PhD students (slaves) to do all his real work while he plays on the computer?

Maybe he is a home decorator and not a neurologist. I've never seen his paperwork....

We only boss him around when we need healing.  Or when we decided he's hogged enough of the resources, chests and quest items in front of us.  Because we're always following him, he always gets to them first.

The funniest moment in-game for me was when we were walking down a road and there's just this random bear there, minding his own business, nothing special about him, just another cookie-cutter mob to pass or kill, and Steve, just out of the blue, goes: "Oh let's kill this bear, I hate that motherfucker."  There was a second of silence before everyone just burst out laughing their asses off.

And Jay, well when we're all apart and decide to meet up somewhere, Jay ALWAYS arrives to our spot last and always has a line-up of about 10 baddies behind him.  We call this the "J-Train".  He seems to pick the longest and most dangerous route to get everywhere.  We've actually started buffing ourselves to prepare for Jay's arrival.

Evan's the joker, he comes up with the funniest stuff and, for some reason, I'm usually the ONLY person laughing.  Sometimes it's out of politeness, but usually not.  He does hilarious impersonations and accents and always has something witty to say for any situation.

For those who are interested...

I know how to right-click and alt-tab. I was programming in basic on a PET computer when you were sucking formula.

The application called "right click" allows you to set up an automatic FTP so that you can right click any file and then select where to FTP it - rather than running an ftp app. I was just trying to save my co-hosts some time, since they have to upload all their files when the show is done. And look what I get.

Based on her post last night, Rebecca must have missed the episode where we closed out talking about how everyone has false memories. But its ok, her colorful and fanciful depiciton is a sign of an active imagination, which is a pre-requisite to enjoying many of life's mental exercises, such as games.

With every sentence she speaks, with every syllable she utters, with each neuron that fires in her brain to compose her every thought, and with each passing moment, it is so blatantly clear, that Rebecca is a nerd, and she occupies one of the top branches of the nerd tree.

The final two stages, Rebecca, are self-acceptance and public admission.

There was an Anime convention in Boston a few weeks ago.....so, after the convention was over, anime fans decided to keep their costumes on and take the train...

I don't know anything but anime, but I didn't think the guy wearing the weird make up and weird outfit was sexy lookin' or cool. Plus, all the 'normies' on the train laughed at the anime people..

There was one girl wearing a giant pointy hat and a matching outfit. Yes, she looked insanely nerdy. Or geeky? How come no one uses the term 'spaz' anymore?

anyway

no one said 'that girl, you see her? wearing the big pointy pink hat and matching outfit? that's my kinda chick'

Heh...

It didn't have a giant eye in it did it?

Maybe she was hot to the other anime nerds?

Who knows...

Personally I have no idea how they do that- I get bothered enough just if I have unnoticeable blemishes on my shirt...

That doesn't mean they weren't thinking it.

You've got to remember that what's not hot to you might be very to someone else.

For instance, I wouldn't have thought I'd ever think that someone dressed as Strawberry Shortcake could be hot - but Dragon*Con showed me otherwise...

Yea, maybe she was hot to the other anime nerds. I give them kudos for being able to go out in public like that. I'm the type that tries to go unnoticed. Whenever rowdy drunks get on the train after a Red Sox game, I pretend I'm reading a book so they won't bother me. (they ALWAYS bother random people.)

I digress!

I can't really find an outfit that resembles hers in those google images...

Ok, so last night me and a friend played our version of the phrase game. This may not be something new but it was a lot of drunken fun.

What we would do was mutually agree on a word or phrase that either one of us would have to bring up in conversation. Duh.

The rules evolved depending on the word or phrase we would use but we definitely could not laugh or smile unless it was completely relevant to the flow of the conversation. We were trying to keep it secret from our friends so basically it was just a race to make each other laugh. Inside.

As the night grew on and I became more and more drunk it became hard to tell who won. But it was fun. I'd like to thank SGU for inspiring an alternative to my usual bar-behavior that typically consists of lurking in a corner, pretending like I'm text messaging, and ogling women.

Motherfuckers

Okay, I'm curious: is the procedure for the show that everybody has to record separately, then upload the .WAV (or whatever) somewhere which is then synced up and mixed to form the final show? I've been wondering how you guys get such good quality with Skype, but if you don't actually use the Skype audio in the final product, that would make sense.

I thought about getting my mom a computer mostly so she could send and receive e-mail with relatives.  Then I realized that it would only take about a month before she would be married to a Nigerian Prince, have refinanced a mortgage about 12 times, and had ordered Levitra for all her relatives (male and female) because she could use a coupon.   :(

Dr. Steve,

My hat is off to you. I know producing your podcast must be like herding cats and like Rodney Dangerfield, "you don't get no respect"  ;D but that entry from you  says it all. I see your experience as a parent has paid off when dealing with the rogues.

On a related note concerning the term nerd, I think the SGU is like the Smurfs.  Steve is of course Papa Smurf and Rebeca is Smurfette so instead of aspiring to be a nerd, she should be known as a nerdette ;)

I'm sure we could assign other names to the rest of the rouges but it's been so long since I watched the Smurfs I can't remember any of the other characters. Anyone have any ideas for Smurf names for the rest of the rogues?

P.S.
I hope Smurfette keeps this topic going. It's the funniest one on the board.

Yeah, the reason why there are sometimes long gaps between my posts on this thread is because some weeks all the good stuff makes it to the show. These posts are either things said during the show that were too dirty or off-topic to make it to air, things typed into chat, or things said when we're not recording. When we're in better moods and/or have more time to chat before and after the show, we get more behind-the-scenes material. Last night was fantastic in terms of all of us clicking very well, and spending plenty of time goofing off when the tape's not rolling. Hence the Smurf porn discussion, which went on for longer than one would expect.

Ha, yes, that is a photo of me and the things on my head are German welder's goggles. I picked them up six or seven years ago because I liked them, but had no real reason to wear them. So I'd occasionally just wear them on my head while goofing off around the house.

You should start wearing them outside of the house........when the questions and stares start coming, you can defend them in the name of a bogus new trend:  "Phelpsian chic!"  :)

And this is for the production of the play, 'Angus MacDougal', about the dog who wanted to be seen as an image of Jesus, walking around with a tortilla which he hoped would trick his owners into seeing something in it.
` One joyous day, his owners notice that his backside looks just like Jesus, with his butt as Jesus' head, and say, "It's a Miracle!"

Thanks for this, Rebecca.  This is great. But i was wondering,  how much time do the rogues devote to the podcast on a weekly basis?

I understand the normal SGU podcast is recorded on Wednesdays so you guys go through news, letter, sci/fic, qotd - normally about 45minutes, but with all the editing, preparation how long does the recording normally take?

Then you have the interview which I guess is done on a day suitable for the interviewee - am I correct?  That must be at least another 1hr for you guys?

Then you've got 5x5 - which is 5-10mins, but it's heavily edited...so I'm guessing around about 30minutes?

If it's 3 different nights that's really got to bite into your social life.  Not to mention the Blogs, research and news that you guys read. kudos to you all.

We do record on Wednesday nights, spending anywhere from 90 minutes to 2 hours recording. We try to schedule interviews during the time that we regularly record, and the 5x5 used to be on another night but thanks to Mike (of this forum and sgufans.net) we can now record the 5x5 in about 10 minutes prior to the regular show. Mike takes the files and edits the show while we go on to the next show.

For the regular show, Steve then has to take all the files and edit them together, which I think takes him at least a few hours each week.

Prepping for the show is impossible to quantify for me, since I spend pretty much all my free time reading, learning, and discussing science and pseudoscience.

Thanks for the kudos!

As you can tell from my post count, I'm still new to the site but I've listened to about a dozen or so SGU podcasts so far. I starting reading this thread and saw rebecca's icon which was my first glimpse at her physical form as opposed to just her audio form and my first thought was "whoa, she's young!". So after a bit of googling I come to learn that yet again I am a horrible judge of what people look like based on their voices. I pictured about 42 years old, a little heavy, and shorter hair. I was a little off, though I did imagine glasses. Well as many of your probably know, she is in fact young-ish, slim, and pretty darn attractive.

Anyway just thought Id share that. Gotta get that post count up somehow  ;)

As you can tell from my post count, I'm still new to the site but I've listened to about a dozen or so SGU podcasts so far. I starting reading this thread and saw rebecca's icon which was my first glimpse at her physical form as opposed to just her audio form and my first thought was "whoa, she's young!". Haha, nothing like a blinded study to overcome selection bias. :D

Welcome to the forums!

I'm not sure if it'll make it to the final edit, but last night Bob definitely said the word "twat," MANY times.

FYI: Much of the behind-the-scenes stuff is now posted to my Twitter, since it's a bit easier ( http://twitter.com/rebeccawatson ). Here's one I just posted:

Jay's cat just puked on his keyboard while we're recording SGU. He's in the bg cursing, I'm laughing, hard.

* Listens to episode 178 *

Just one question, I wonder how much alcohol is consumed during the recording of an episode?

Personally, I've rarely had a drink during a podcast (I'd be surprised if it was more often than once or twice).

i'm actually not surprised by that - of course, that doesn't mean that you don't drink beforehand ;)

but seriously, i expect that the joking and all that is because you guys are pretty comfortable with what you're doing and with each other.  and then there's jay :)

rebecca's reenactment of jay's cat vomiting on his keyboard was probably better than the original, if only because rebecca's voice is 5% sexier than jay's.  :P

Now that would make for a great Priemium Content Download!  ;D
Seriously tho, I wish you guys would consider an "outtakes reel".  Steve does all the final cuts/edits? He never archives some of the funnier interactions? I often imagine how much funny & "family unfriendly" stuff gets left out  ;)

A little something I pulled from the latest 5x5 edit, I might make more of these if I think of it:

ETA: If there's a better way to add an mp3 to a post, let me know.

Motherfuckers

Well I never. When I think I couldn't love Steve more...
