General Discussion / Fountian of youth
« on: July 02, 2018, 01:10:07 PM »
The fountain of youth miracle pills all over again. Can someone point me to some science based articles on this new age immortal pill (snake oil) so I can start my skeptical engine?   http://explore.truniagen.com/

General Discussion / Resist movment questions
« on: January 19, 2017, 01:38:31 PM »
Hi all,

Does anyone know who created the new "resist" movement? Their website declares no leaders or real origin of their moment. Those are the foundations I want to learn about when encountering a new social moment.
From their website.....
 "Who created the RESIST symbol?
We are a diverse group of people: everyone from recent graduates to retired engineers to designers and artists who came together to channel our political disappointment into constructive action."

General Discussion / skeptical spectacles?
« on: December 05, 2016, 10:53:59 PM »
At what age did you put on your skeptical spectacles and realize there are frauds and scams in plain sight ? I was about 5 when I first questions and my 16 I started to really get thicker skeptical spectacles.

General Discussion / Haven't read the big books
« on: December 05, 2016, 10:49:41 PM »
Being a critical thinker and a bit of a skeptic as a kid growing up I came to these self evident conclusions mostly on my own. I feel as a result of that I never felt the dire need to read any of the "old white men" series of skeptics top 5-10 books. Do you think any of them will help me understand my own process better. I have only read FlimFlam and Science as a candle in the dark. Is it worth my tim to read the  Dawkins, Shermer, or Hitchens kind of stuff. I never much like them when I watch their video clips.

General Discussion / WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL SKEPTIC ORIGIN STORIES ?
« on: November 30, 2016, 09:59:27 PM »
My Talk for NYC Skepticamp 2016 This saturday.  http://www.skepticampnyc.org/

OUR SKEPTIC ORIGIN STORY
We all have an origin story

I will explain my skeptic origin story.
Then I will ask if anyone wants to share their skeptic and critical thinking origin story.

Stage one the gaff.
It all started when I was about five years and saw my first magic show at the Andrus Planetarium in Yonkers.
The magician did the droopy wand trick and the coloring book trick along with a bunch of others.
I immediately realized it was just a very simple mechanical gimmick and how they might be done.
Oh I wanted to raise my hand and go up and grab that wand the way the performer did.
I promptly went to the library and got the 2-3 magic book in the kids section.

Stage two enter the Amazing.
At about nine years old I saw a man with telekinetic powers on TV move stuff with his mind. A week later I watched James Randi tell the world he was full of shit.
From then on I would take note of this angry man that would attack any scam, fraud, or con game. I watched him for years on TV doing what he does.

Stage three the Mitzvah.
I did not have a religious family, as a kid I thought the Charlton Heston movie Ten Commandments was a Sci Fi movie like King Kong. I had no clue it was a "real" story.
It was when my parents decided to send me to Hebrew school for a Bar Mitzvah at about twelve I discovered religion, sexism, racism, and fanaticism all tied up in one shitball of obvious lies and deceit in the face of adults.
I also discovered I could not ask questions and get honest answers. From then on I started to awaken.

Stage four the rejection
Being a teenager and not realizing that when someone was asking me what my sign was the wrong answer was "horoscopes are bullshit".
I thought I was the only one the know eggs dont balance on the equinox and ougi boards are nothing.
The class freaked out in Grade school on board game day and I brought in a ouiji board and I got in trouble for it.
I started to build a skeptic bubble around my self for fear of rejection and ended up saying nothing at all in the face of woo woo.

Stage five the awakening.
About 20 years ago I discovered the JREF and immediately joined. I was amazed the this James Randi had a club that I felt part of.
I learned all about the many people he has worked with and they were all my celebrity heroes. From fucking Issac Asimov to Carl Freaking Sagan. Shit even Penn and Tell are his buddies, I had no Idea. The internet explioded with many podcasts. Skepticality, SGU, Skeptiod, Geologic, the list is long.I never want to any of the TAMs it seemed too far away. Luckily the NYC skeptics appeared and I joined and went to the first Skepticamp and NECSS and was in a daze.
My only answer was to volunteer and get involved as much as my time here lets me and devoleop new skepti ideas.

And that brings me here today with my story.

General Discussion / Swastika seen on vacation in PA
« on: November 10, 2016, 03:50:33 PM »
When on vacation in PA we drove past a man with a swastika on a shopping cart. It really was a bit disturbing, the person seemed homeless and that made me sad. We passed him again a few hours later and I took a photo because I wanted to share it. Now I am afraid sharing it will cause more harm than good and I feel like crap thinking about it.
