‘Family Guy’ Creator Part of ‘Cosmos’ Update
By DAVE ITZKOFF

“Cosmos,” the 1980 documentary mini-series that encouraged a generation of viewers to contemplate the origins of the universe and their place in it, and made an unlikely television personality out of the astronomer Carl Sagan, is poised to return to terrestrial airwaves. Only this time the starship is being steered by a pilot whose identity you might not surmise even if you had billions and billions of guesses.

On Friday the Fox network is to announce that it has ordered a 13-episode series, “Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey,” expected to be broadcast in 2013. As part of a creative team that includes Ann Druyan, Sagan’s widow and a collaborator on the original “Cosmos,” one of the executive producers is Seth MacFarlane, the creator, producer, co-star and animating spirit of “Family Guy,” the bawdy and irreverent Fox cartoon sitcom.

Yet behind a comic sensibility that is sometimes provocative and sometimes puerile, Mr. MacFarlane is a committed fan of the first “Cosmos” who laments a modern society that he says has lost its fascination with science.

“We’re obsessed with angels and vampires and whatnot,” Mr. MacFarlane, 37, said in a telephone interview, “when there are many more exciting and very real and much more spectacular things to be excited about, that are right in our own planetary backyard.”

When the original “Cosmos” (subtitled “A Personal Voyage”) was first shown on PBS from September to December 1980, it was a watershed moment for science-themed television programming. Sagan’s look at existence at its most massive and microscopic, accompanied by a contemplative score by the Greek composer Vangelis, were eventually viewed by 400 million people in 60 countries, making it public television’s most-watched short-form series until the Ken Burns documentary “The Civil War.”

While its visions of intergalactic travel made an impression on a young Mr. MacFarlane (see the many “Star Trek” and “Star Wars” references on “Family Guy”), the intrepid spirit of “Cosmos” is now hard to reconcile with an era in which NASA has no clear successor to its recently ended space shuttle program.

“The older I got, I noticed a pattern in our culture of lethargy,” Mr. MacFarlane said. “We got to the Moon, and then we just stopped.”

In 2009 Mr. MacFarlane was introduced by Neil deGrasse Tyson, the astrophysicist, “Nova ScienceNow” host and director of the Hayden Planetarium, to Ms. Druyan, a “Cosmos” co-creator.

For several years Ms. Druyan said, she, Dr. Tyson and Steven Soter, another collaborator on the original series, pitched a new version of “Cosmos” to “the usual television network suspects” that did not quite see mass appeal in the series.

“We weren’t interested in going to the audience that already knew that it loved science,” Ms. Druyan said. “We wanted to go to the largest possible audience and attract people who’d never even thought about it.”

But with the support of Mr. MacFarlane the “Cosmos” team obtained meetings with Peter Rice, the chairman of Fox Broadcasting, and Kevin Reilly, the network’s entertainment president, who gave the series a green light last year. The new series will be produced with the National Geographic Channel, which will show episodes after they run on Fox.

Mr. MacFarlane and Ms. Druyan are now close friends and more compatible than their reputations might suggest. Ms. Druyan said Mr. MacFarlane was a hero in her household, where she and her children are regular “Family Guy” viewers.

Their personal politics also overlap from time to time: Ms. Druyan is on the advisory board of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, whose values are occasionally espoused on “Family Guy.” And Mr. MacFarlane once assigned one of his writers to read an essay about abortion by Sagan and Ms. Druyan before tackling a controversial “Family Guy” episode on that same topic.

Mr. MacFarlane seems to have an ever-increasing entertainment portfolio. He is also serving as an executive producer of the Fox animated programs “American Dad!” and “The Cleveland Show”; preparing a revival of “The Flintstones” for the network; releasing a pop album; and directing his first feature film, “Ted,” about a man with a living teddy bear. He said he understood that his love of lowbrow culture and low humor made him the odd man out on “Cosmos.”

“I’m perhaps the least essential person in this equation,” he said. “This is obviously a complete departure from anything that I’ve done professionally, but it’s very comfortable territory for me personally.” (Unlike Mr. MacFarlane’s cartoon shows, the new “Cosmos” will not feature non-sequitur pop-culture jokes, and will be hosted by Dr. Tyson.)

Ms. Druyan said that though Mr. MacFarlane never knew her husband, who died in 1996, “I’ve imagined Seth and Carl meeting, an infinite number of times, adding that as “two men with just protean talents,” they surely would have been kindred spirits.

“Now, I’ve heard stories about my husband before we were together, that he wasn’t always that nice,” Ms. Druyan said. “But the guy I knew was truly good. That’s just the vibe of being with Seth.”

Good things I see: Support from Ann and Steven Soter, Seth despite being a tool has a great interest in science, Neil Tyson sees Sagan as a mentor and greatly respected the man. Hopefully in HD

Possible bad: Shown on fox, produced by National Geographic. Should be back on PBS personally.

What can never be replaced: Sagan

Fixed.

It is a sad comment on our society that the NYT is describing it as "Cosmos with Seth MacFarlane" rather than "Cosmos with Neil Tyson".

It is sad that Neil is the lesser known of the two, but I'm glad Seth is on board. Hopefully that will legitimize the show(entertainment wise) for people who wouldn't be interested otherwise.

With all the probes going out plus the James Webb telescope it should make for some good TV.

This is nothing but great news

Neil is the perfect person to host it, and the Family Guy connection is pretty much irrelevant [I think that his prominence in the article says more about the NYT than about the production]. I can't see a problem with it being on Fox or any other channel, as long as it's out there.

I've just been (re)watching the original series, and as brilliant as it is, it is very dated special effects wise, and there have been a ton of things discovered since then. Bring it on!

cool deal, maybe Seth with come on Neil's show star talk (http://startalkradio.net/) to pimp it.  I know it's a radio show and not a podcast but because I listen to as a podcast it's become one of my fav's.  Neil is one of the best popularizer’s of science, I think in part because he's just so damn jovial.

With someone as popular as Seth promoting this sort of thinking this has WIN written all over it.
Don't a lot of people who watch FOX need some educating? I'm pretty sure the PBS viewers are already in the pro-science camp.
The last thing we need to do is preach to the converted.

A clear sign of someone who has never actually watched the other series.  American Dad ditched all of the formulas in Family Guy and its for the best.

Wouldn't a remake be crazy redundant? So much has been discovered since the original show I don't see why they would need to retread any of the original content.

The original Cosmos was mostly about the history of scientific discovery, and there is plenty of scientific history yet to cover.  I would be very disappointed if the ruined the reputation of Cosmos by making it into a generic "Latest Scientific Discoveries... dumbed down and hyped up for your enjoyment"-type show.  That would be worse than what Lucas did to Star Wars.

Neil is a super smart guy - not just in a sciencey, timey wimey way, but in a communication and entertainment way.  I think this is going to go through the roof (and i say that as someone for whom the first 'Cosmos' was not only a life changing experience, but remains so through DVD viewings today).

Or Ronald Emmerich: Cosmos II - How the world will end

Come to think of it, they should get Ronald Emmerich to make a series of Death From the Skies.

NDT is a great fit, and I think Ann Druyan and MacFarlane could be an epic pairing. Trying not to get my hopes up TOO much, but...

Writing and narrating were not the only things that made Cosmos great.

The music was great; Vangelis, some symphonies and other songs.

Hopefully the episodes will be long (1h) and the editing calm. Also hopefully they won't have those annoying "this is what will happen next" intros after every ad break.

We're currently saturated with space documentaries who all seem to interview the same people over and over.
I see Geoff Marcy, Chris McKay and Caroline Porco in just about every series that I've seen since 1998(don't get me wrong, I love those guys, but space science moves slowly).

Hopefully it steers clear of the interview formula and takes it some place different.

If it had an interview formula it wouldn't be cosmos, would it?  the whoel point of Cosmos was to get away from the boring "Just ask this Scientician..." format of documentaries.  There was only one episode of the original Cosmos series that had any interviews with "real scientists" at all, and those were much less "staged", more authentic then anything you see on typical science documentaries.

I'm not saying it's not possible that they intend to spit on Sagan's grave and ruin the reputation of the original Cosmos forever by simply taking the name "Cosmos" and slapping it some bullshit generic documentary, but given who's involved, I doubt that'll happen.

Then again -- it took George Lucas to ruin Star Wars!  :-\

I think Seth McFarlane's involvement is excellent. I'm not much of a Family Guy fan, but given his pull at Fox, it should mean that the series will be produced without network stooges getting too involved.

Tyson is also the perfect choice to host, he's a great communicator and presents things in an approachable way. My wife isn't too into cosmology or astronomy, but she enjoys watching Tyson on The Daily Show or NOVA ScienceNow.

Nobody will ever replace Sagan or the original Cosmos though...

Why? That would be completely pointless. I'm sure they could come up with some amazing new images for it.

Re-Creation of the scenes with modern techniques would kick some serious arse.

Agreed, assuming they let Tyson be Tyson. A great deal of Cosmos worked so well because of Sagan's personality: the flatlanders bit, or the thoughtful musings as he strolls through a picturesque scene, for example.

The show is meant to reintroduce Cosmos to a new generation, not to satisfy the nostalgia of the previous generation.

I'm not nostalgic.
When it came out I was 2.
I didn't see it until I was 32 (last year), and that was a craptastic well worn VHS version.
Great concepts and visual limited by the technology and techniques of the day.

Now we have great 3d visuals, excellent HD cameras, a butt load of sweet filters and specialist camera operators, lighting techs etc...

Agreed! I'm 28, and have watched the whole series (all for the first time) over the last 6 months. I couldn't stop imagining how perfect it could be with some modern technological tweaking.

No offense, but you're not the intended audience. I remember when I was first shown Cosmos back in middle school and then again in high school. It was absurdly outdated and thus quite boring. Updating it with a new entertaining face and new content will hopefully spark some interest in science in today's generation of kids. It's meant for those who either can't be bothered to watch the original Cosmos or who don't care for it because it's old.

No offense. But I think your imagination is broke.  ;D
Probably the biggest thing with the original, is the pacing.
It's very calm and sedate. Part of that is Carl.
But part of that is due to editing on a goddamn linear tape machine.
Since non-destructive editing hadn't been invented yet, there were limits to what could be done.
Now we have killer tech for this stuff, it can be updated nicely without putting off it's intended audience.

Frankly, the program deserves a big audience, rather than just a niche target market.

Kids need inspiring. And adults need reminders.

So ok, i'll back down a bit.
Not shot for shot, but scene for scene.

In reply to this thread and to the SG "Cosmos" podcast around the same time ...
Well, Mr. Tyson is in the newz again, promotin' his new basics physics book.

Hmmm .... don't get me wrong... I have nothing against his kind. I mean, like, I voted for Barack both times. I mean he is The Man. If he somehow re-ran for anything, I'd wear his dirty drawers.
But I dunno about NdT. I mean the brothea may be better than Sagan. But after all, Carl got the PBS contact 'cause he filled the minority quota (Sagan was Jewish).
PBS was progressive, man: I mean Sesame Street was full o' da underclass ... since the early 70's. Ernie was a wetback, right. And PBS even gave Morgan Freeman a break on The Electric Company ...

Hey, growin' up in rural Iowa, I never personally talked to a N---er 'till I visited the big city. But this over-representation of the Afro race gets us Whities all po'd ... and ... uh ... sways our votes for Trump.
2020 .... you bet.

Below ... the "READ" public service campaign from the 1980. Because most minorities are BORN handicap and need help with this basic skill:

Got that one. Left it on my wife's pillow while she was at work and sent a text. "Neil deGrasse Tyson" is waiting for you in your bed.

Uh, noted. Congratulations. I imagine posterity would breathe a sigh of relief.

As much as I enjoyed that rhetorical flourish, you're still expected to stick to the Forum Rules (http://sguforums.com/index.php/topic,4.0.html). If you wish to debate this further - although the 'flushed day' seemed like a great natural closing point to me - please open a thread in the Forum Admin and Rules sub-forum.

You could yell the n-word into a dark cave where no-one could possibly hear, and you'd still be an asshole.
