Maum Meditation - Meditation club or new cult?
« on: November 01, 2010, 01:51:24 AM »
I found a 28 page booklet in a restaurant in Cambridge MA, USA  for "Maum Meditation: Cleansing Mind and Body   The 7-Step Method to Find Your True Mind"

It initially claims that it is just a meditation technique but goes elsewhere pretty fast.

Quote
Maum Meditation has a unique method of emptying the mind.

Probably followed by an emptying of the wallet.

The claim 300,000 'students' and further claim that 'students' report becoming free of stress, anxiety [ed yeah fine], ... depression, hypertension, various illnesses [ed these seem like backhand medical claims]

The founder is named 'Woo Myung'  [ed really his name is Woo] and in a brief biography the booklet claims Myung achieved enlightenment and became "The Truth" through meditation. Further it claims that

Quote
Woo Myung was awarded the Mahatma Gandhi Peace Prize by the United Nations-NGO International Association of Educators for World Peace...has also been appointed as a United Nations-NGO World Peace Ambassador by the same organization.

The International Association of Educators for World Peace does exist (www.iaewp.org) and is registered as an UN NGO, but I found no mention of the "Mahatma Gandhi Peace Prize" or Woo Myung on their web site.

The booklet has pictures of happy people ( stock??), a satisfaction survey of 473 'students', and testimonials (It Is All About the Truth;I Finally Found a Way to Be Happy Without Stressing; Now I know What Real Happiness Is; Now I wake Up in the Mornings Without Fear and Anxiety) and lists the 280 "meditation centers" across the world. They claim no religious influences and count Buddhists, Christians and atheists among the trainees.

I did not find mention of Maum on the cult lists and if they are not trying to isolate people from their other friends they may just trying to cash in.  Still enough flags here to keep a watch on this.

Please share if you have any information.

Thanks for the info.  That seems to be the prize awarded by the Indian Government.  The claim in booklet is prize of the same name awarded by the IAEWP.   I first thought that the IAEWP might have been owned by Woo Myung.  It doesn't appear to be the case but still haven't found corroborating evidence to support the claims in the booklet about Mr. Myung's connection to the IAEWP.

Its a cult.  Legitimate meditation groups can't afford 28-page booklets.

Finding it in a restaurant is also a red flag - it seems to be becoming popular for cults with a south or east asian flavor to fund themselves by running restaurants.  Sri Chinmoy, Guan Yin Method, and another whose name I forget all do it.

After trying this meditation practice myself, I had to end because of the deceptive approach to it. The deception is that they promise enlightenment at the end of the road - beyond level 8, but in fact they lead you into believing that Woo Myung Su Saeng is an enlightened being and deserves our praise. That's deception! Why must we worship Woo Myung Su Saeng in order to achieve egalitarian enlightenment? With that said, I threw together this little note:

Maum Meditation = Death Cult

This new meditation in America is in fact a cult. They believe their leader, the manifestation of "the Truth", is an enlightened being who can bring others to enlightenment. However, the first practice and every day practice is to kill oneself in the mind through graphic violent death visions. After time, this form of brainwashing can remove inhibitions. Then throwing away every image in your brain, even the ones that pop up at every moment, which is impossible because our thoughts are infinite.

They purport that there are 8 levels, but after that you must continue because you haven't reached enlightenment yet. The charge monthly is $150.00, with a $1,000.00 "sky fund donation" required at level 5. They also suggest for members to purchase reading material and other products.

The founder, Woo Myung, lives on Long Island even though the main compound is in Korea. In either level 4 or 5, a hymn praising Woo Myung must be learned. All levels are secretive unless you are in that level and level 8 members are only privy to and granted access to the level 8 only web portal. There is a chair at all centers reserved only for Woo Myung, no one may sit on it. His wife is only allowed to meet with level 8 members although Woo Myung himself sometimes stops by centers to critique people's attitudes and progress. The fanaticism and devotion required to him and the brainwashing method is intense; thus creating a cult.

The "helpers", people who guide your meditation and are 8th level, even though reaching "enlightenment" themselves, show frustration, apathy, and dislike to some participants, especially when asked questions they cannot answer. Many helpers smile a fake smile and loving atmosphere, just to create a false sense of acceptance. When not present for more than 2 days, the calls begin.
A person who doesn't fear death in a cult could be very dangerous person.

-Former practitioner with sense to know this isn't meditation, it's daily brainwashing.

Someone should correct the Wikipedia articles on this guy and his cult since they seem to just be repeating info from their promotional material with nothing about the dangers of this group at all.

I used to practice Maum Meditation and I have much experience with Maum Meditation. Recently this organization start changing their name on the Facebook and on the Internet, I think it because people start posting their true experience with this organization, now they go under something like “Meditation Method”, “Meditation North America”, “Arlington Meditation” and etc. I would guess they are doing this because under new names it will be harder to find the truth about this organization. On the Yelp website you can find some good and some bad reviews about their centers, it is obvious that some very good reviews are removed by Yelp because they were posted by Maum organization themselves using same IP address.

I would like to share my experience and I hope that it will be helpful for somebody out there. If you are reading this you ether are involved with Maum Meditation or you just discovered it and looking for more information. First, what is maum meditation ? During the introductory lecture Maum Meditation helpers (people who work their, guiding during meditation, are called “helpers”) will tell you that your mind is full of garbage, and they will help you to clean it. So is maum meditation good and right method to reduce stress and (as Maum Meditation promise) spiritual enlightenment, and peaceful mind? My experience in the beginning was really good, right now not so good.
“When a person first begins in their spiritual journey they are like babes in the woods. They are prey to every cult, religion and con artist out there”. Inelia Benz.https://ascension101.com/en/awakening/46-dangers-of-spiritual-awakening.html
If you practicing maum meditation you would say “but I am getting amazing results”,“I can sleep better, I am more relaxed, I tried many other methods and only this feels right, or my relationship improved dramatically, or I felt something extraordinary”or similar feelings. Yes, you are right, in the beginning some of us getting some results, and here is why- what’s happening with us during this meditation its nothing new, those techniques are used for over 200 years (studies are done and books are written by neuroscientist and psychiatrists Kathleen Taylo, Ivan Pavlov, William Walters and other scientists ). A brief explanation – during this meditation our body goes through stress, because Maum Meditation is not a meditation that you sit quietly and suppress your thoughts, during maum meditation you are doing subtraction, you constantly in your mind bringing up your memories from the past (pictures) and mentally destroying them, also destroying your body, your friends, your family, destroying everybody and everything (as you progress in Maum meditation levels), so during long hours of this kind destruction our body goes through stress and brain releases chemicals called Endorphins. Endorphins are feel good chemicals our bodies release under pain or stress. They are considered the bodies own opiates. So we kind drugging our self during this meditation. And as we practice this method more and for longer hours per day, the result of this mental stage we get is impaired mental judgment and increased suggestibility.Basically our brain goes flat – “clean slate state”, and existing mental programming is replaced, by maum meditation helpers, with new patterns of thinking and behavior- our mind is reprogrammed to serve maum meditation group. Once a person has been “reprogrammed” they often cannot think for themselves, and become intellectually as well as emotionally dependent upon Maum meditation helpers and leaders, a person starts trusting them completely, a person’s ability to question information and use critical analysis are eliminated. We start going door to door to distribute Maum meditation flyers to recruit more members, start using food supplements Maum meditation sells us, and so on and on. This state of mind is a reversion to an earlier state of evolution.
In my opinion Maum meditation using mind control techniques, after receiving this new programming we passionately defend Maum meditation and their leaders, and we start claiming that we been “shown the truth”, “we will be saved”. . . or “this is amazing method”.
So is Maum Meditation a cult?
A while ago I would said no way Maum meditation is a cult, everybody so nice and loving, no way I am in a cult. Now I can say- nobody ever joints a cult, nobody joins something they think is going to hurt them. We join a religious organization, some movement, a yoga class or similar, and we join with people that we really like. Don’t you?

“The first rule of a cult recruitment, is that a recruit must never suspect he or she is being recruited” (psychologist Margaret Singer)
No one has ever been brainwashed and realized, or believed, that he or she had been brainwashed. Those who have been brainwashed will usually passionately defend their manipulators. I can tell from my personal experience If you are in a relationship and in to this meditation then most likely your relationship will be ruined as more and more you progress in Maum Meditation levels. Cults usually try to cut you off from your friends and family because they hate others being able to influence you. So what is this maum meditation ? My opinion its a destructive cult. Do search on the internet and you will find many cases and testimonials of ex Maum meditation members, calls for help from kids, spouses, friends about losing loved ones to Maum Meditation.

How did I awakened from this Maum meditation dream? More you progress in Maum Meditation levels more some cultic signs start appearing, thats where a lot of people start leaving the group. My expirience was more painfull, but I realised that Maum Meditation is about money and recruiting more people who will bring more money to the organization, Inelia’s Benz article for me was like a breath of fresh air. I just realised what the truth is, what is true freedom of mind and soul, we just can’t pay a fee and meditate our self to salvation or enlightenment, I wish this for everyone, for Maum Meditation helpers and for everyone who got in to a similar group or organization.

As old Korean quote says 김치국부터 마시지 말라 “Don’t drink the Kimchi soup first”, my advice for those who just discovered Maum meditation- don’t jump ahead of your self, don’t think you found the right method before you will do research about Maum meditation group, read testimonials of people who left the group, read what is mind control, find information about destructive cults and what they do.
Here is few questions

Does Maum meditation operates using deception ? Is it true that when you first sign up they don’t tell you about a large sum of money you will have to pay for the “culmination process” (also called “chaMaum meditationa education” to receive “human completion”)with the Maum meditation founder?
Does Maum meditation needs to hide the truth until they think you are ready to accept it? If people knew their true practices and beliefs beforehand then they would still join them or not?
Is it true that after completing few levels (and when they think you are ready) Maum meditation helpers ask for $1000 Sky fund donation so that their group founder can remove your deceased family members from purgatory ?
Is it true that to finish and pass level 4, you have to accept and be certain that Maum meditation founder and his wife are creators of the Universe?
Is it true that Maum meditation also practice what they call “active meditation” to distribute maum meditation flyers and recruit new members?
Is it true that “culmination process” cost is $4000- $6000 ? or half or all of your savings?

Nowadays, maum meditation cult use new tricks to attract new members. Members get more stress because their leader, hypocrite woo myung & his family push members to get more members and money. All in all, Maum is very much like the Scientologists, the Moonies, TM and other scurrilous cults. They pick up vulnerable people, teach them a few simple techniques to help sort their lives out, but in the process brainwash them with sleep deprivation, extended meditation sessions, brow-beating and other techniques into dependency and obedience, while draining money from them. There’s a multi-step programme of ever-higher levels of teaching, and above the bottom levels, students are taught to recruit and extract money from vulnerable people, and so on.

Their leader used to claim to be a UN World Peace Ambassador; however, there is no such post or any mention of Woo Myung on the UN site. Lately, I note that the “UN” part of the title has been dropped (check the history of the wikipedia page on Maum).

I would be interested to know what make of car Woo Myung drives, and what his home is like. Non-profit? Yah.

Meditation should not rip a family apart… something seems off here…Like victims of tick bites are often unaware, as the parasites inject painkilling agents to numb the bite and start sucking your blood and living on you.

Same with Maum meditation its like parasitic tick attaches to your soul, injects some happiness drug in to you, and keeps sucking until you either awaken and remove the parasite or they will finished suck on you until it take your body and soul and your life completely, and you become one of their parasitic drones looking for a prey.

PLEASE do search about their organization, read ex member’s testimonials. Ask questions, because maum meditation hiding a lot from you.

What they are hiding ? They are hiding about the last level (it has several names- level 8, or culmination level, or chamma education, or human completion), after several years of practicing maum without this “culmination” you won’t be “complete”and they will make this clear that all your years of meditating will be for nothing if you don’t do this last level. They will demand high amount of money for it. They also hiding that to pass one of the levels, you will have to accept, that their leader Woo Myung is the Creator of the Universe. They are hiding about Sky fund donation requests to relieve your past away ancestors.

I am ex member of maum organization, I have been at their conferences, meetings, certainly they have dark energy circulating, its not natural, its not from Nature. Some darkness fills their minds and bodies. “Complete” (as they call them self’s) maum members has no normal life, they have hard time to keep a regular conversation going other than about maum meditation, they brag a lot about how happy they are, at the conferences maum leaders tells you that they are enlightened beings, and so on. I can tell this- they have no true freedom, their freedom is in the maum cult. Maum Meditation uses mind control techniques for their own gain. If you practice maum you are being brainwashed, you won’t know this, because their drug makes you feel happy, and you becoming addicted to it.

If you were or will be able to escape from maum meditation group, you will become stronger, brighter and wiser, you will understand that to be truly enlightened and live happy in peace, you don’t need any artificial methods and levels.

LET THE LIFE FLOW THROUGH YOU, LET IT FLOW NATURALLY, YOU DON’T NEED ANY SHORTCUTS, each of us we supposed to carry our own cross without help especially from maum meditation or similar organization.

Maum meditation cult members do not allow their teachings or practices to be questioned. If you question, then automatically the group assumes that something is wrong with you. It can never be the case that anything is wrong with the group’s practices or teachings. Often they will try to shut you down by accusing you of having a “bad attitude”.

IF YOU QUESTION IT, THEY WILL TELL YOU THAT YOU HAVE DIRTY HUMAN MIND.

They will push you to obey by using guilt. They will demand complete “submission” to the group, its leaders and its teachings. They will do this by making you feel absolutely rotten about yourself. They will ridicule you and attack any weakness you might have (or invent weaknesses you might have if they can’t find any). Their goal is to break your will by causing you mental anguish.

they don’t tell the truth until they get your mind controlled. They won’t tell you that after level 7 is another level, or what they sometime call it “culmination” process with the leader Woo Myung, it last about three weeks or so, you will be send to a camp in Argentina or Korea, or some other place, they will ask you to pay large amount of money for that, around $6000 , or more depends on your financial status.
